“Stupica” … a Smart Little Anchorage on Zirje
28 August 2009 | Croatia's Dalmatian Coast
After a couple of nights anchored in the clear turquoise water of Potkucina on Kakan, we undertook a journey of epic proportions: a full 7 miles to nearby Zirje, one of the "out islands" off Sibenik. Mala Stupica, as opposed to the larger Vela Stupica looked like a smart little anchorage, especially once we tucked up into the top of the bay and tied the stern off to a shore-side boulder. We were delighted when pals Sandra and Chris on "Deep Blue" joined us for a "raft-up".
A hike, many swims, a scuba "bottom job" and shared meals and stories has made for great fun. Noteworthy during our hike was coming across a paved road leading to the highest peak on the island. Trekking up we came across an abandoned "hardened" radar site with massive concrete bunkers and structures. We had read a warning against wandering off the trails for fear of landmines, and it appears this was a strategic point in the recent war.
Last night, having been forewarned by the excellent Croatian weather service, we easily withstood a "mini-Bora" of 25 knots during the night with our carefully arranged double anchors and double rock tie-ups; nothing like "belts and suspenders" to keep the boat secure! Today we're lazing about ... all we need is the Sunday Times crossword and a strong internet connection for family phone calls via Skype!
Cruisers Note: Deep anchorage until we reached the head of the bay; easy rock tie-off with the bow anchor set almost entirely across the bay in 15 feet of water. Unlike neighboring Vela Stupica, no mooring buoys and no fees!
