04 May 2009 | Siracusa, Sicily
We're launchiing both the boat and website, so now the season's adventures, and their record, truly begin. Sangaris spent the winter in Siracusa, Sicily where we arrived last September and fell in love with the old city's great harbor, incredible fresh market, magical day and evening lighting and met a most congenial group of cruising sailors. We felt 'at home' and soon found a funky boatyard to haul and store the boat while we returned to Florida. Upon our return April 30th, we had the good fortune of a rental apartment in the old town of Ortygia and perfect weather for our 5 weeks of "on the hard" projects. Each day we bicycled "to work" and completed a score of maintenance tasks, including bottom & boot stripe painting, fiberglass repair, bow thruster ....... and some wood-working updates (see photo gallery for shots of the crew!) Each night we were rewarded with the best of the daily markets' bounty: pomodori pachino (the sweetest little tomatoes!), local seafood (fabulously tender calamari & delicious spado), ruby red oranges, homemade wet mozzarella and lovely aged asiago and, of course, the regions famous fresh olives & herbs. The local chardonnay and rich Nero D'Avola wines at 1.60€/liter were the perfect accompaniment.
