July 19th... Annapolis, MD to Solomons, MD

We left Annapolis at 8:20 with a good south breeze and sailed across the Bay and back twice by noon before we realized that we were not going to make our destination by dark if we didn't run the engine for a while. We were not at all happy... but turned it on, still tacked back and forth to use the wind as much as possible . The engine allowed us to point a little higher, reducing each tack by about 4 miles.

By the middle of the afternoon the wind had increased and we found ourselves pounding into both the tide and 3 foot waves. We'd be cruising at 5 knots and then bam we'd hit a couple of waves wrong and our speed would be down to 2 knots. The engine let us recover a little faster.

The rule in the Chesapeake is to arrive at your destination on Friday before the weekend crowd shows up and we were a little worried about finding a spot on Saturday evening in Solomons. As it turned out there were two ideal spots to choose from in our old anchorage.

Be the time we had the boat put back together it was time to think about dinner. I ended up sautéing some shimp in butter, garlic, and a little bacon and then tossing them on some penne. Kathy made a salad and we had a fine meal.

July 17th ... Annapolis, MD

We made some hot water, showered and generally wasted time until 10:00 this morning and then took the dinghy to shore near the Sailrite Store. Since our new cushions look so good we've decided to recover the rear seats as well. One more yard of material should do the trick. We also needed some snaps and a few other minor items.

After returning to the boat we had some lunch and got out the sewing machine to begin work on our side panels. During the afternoon I heard a boat anchoring nearby and looked up to see "Veranda" . We worked until about 4:30 and then got cleaned up.

At 5:30 we joined Bill and Christy of Veranda for dinner at the Boatyard.

July 18th... Annapolis, MD

Another hot day spent cutting, fitting and sewing our cockpit side panels. By quitting time we had one done and the other cut out .

In the afternoon we took a dinghy ride to get rid of the trash and pick up some ice but that was about all we did.

After dinner sailboats began to gather in the harbor where we are anchored. They were all sizes but there were no cruising boats, just racers. We watched as more and more of them showed up and spoke to a couple as they sailed in and out of the anchorage. They were racing to Solomon's which is about 40 miles to the south. It is one of the biggest races in the Chesapeake and draws boats from all over.

Bill and Christy came for the start of the race and we watched a spectacular moon rise.
