Haul Out Day

"I always feel like The Ghost from Christmas Past when we do this exercise of hauling the heavy chain out on our side deck to rinse it and let it dry." On our primary alone, we have 200' of chain and 120' of rope. Then our secondary anchor has 200' of rope and 30' of chain.

Getting Ready to be Hauled Out

We enjoyed a lovely leisurely couple of days sailing down to Grenada from Bequia, arriving on Palm Sunday.

Grenada's Cruiser's Net

The cruiser’s net in Grenada is always very lively. On Safety and Security this morning we heard that a sailboat coming up from Trinidad had a boatful of eight ‘Venezuelan looking’ men trying to overtake them. The sailboat was able to get away,. but the hull is riddled with bullet holes. They [...]

New Way to Clear into Customs

How do you clear in to Customs, when you arrive at a port and don’t feel like blowing up your dinghy?

Teaching William some Notes

I realized that if I set up my piano early in the morning, then I can play before there is too much sun in the cockpit.

Paddling around Bequia

As my buddy Joan Dwyer would say, “the goal in paddle boarding is to avoid looking like a little old lady pushing a Wegman’s cart.” Actually, I’ll be doing that soon enough as we are heading home in a week.

“ Superwoman!”

“So what EXACTLY makes Alicia Superwoman?” Bill Baum asked about the nickname we’d come up with for his wife, Alicia.
“Well on our boat,” Moby explained, “we have a pretty straightforward delineation between pink and blue jobs and of the jobs we share. But on YOUR boat, we figured the conversation probably goes like this, “ It’s MY turn to do the oil change.” “No, you did the oil change LAST time. It’s MY turn!”
Bill laughed. “It’s not exactly like that. I do all the oil changes,… and all the plumbing. Does that make me Superman?”, he asked hopefully.
“No. The fact is that Alicia has an amazing range of skills. She has totally rewired their 33’ Erikson, made all of the sail covers, made all the canvas covers for their dinghy, did a better job than the professional who was going to charge them $1500 to make a new bimini. She is an accomplished sailor & navigator. Bakes their own bread on the boat. And Salsa dances.”
“But I refuse to go to the top of the mast”, she commented.
“And, it takes two to Salsa.”
We had such a good time comparing notes and catching up with the Baums. We’d been wanting to meet up with Bill & Alicia in the Caribbean since they first set sail three years ago. Like us, they spend about a half a year sailing on their boat and the other half year, enjoying land activities. For instance, they’ve just bought an RV to attach to a pickup truck. (Problem was, they didn’t have a pickup truck, so they had to buy one of those, too.) Traveled a few thousand miles through Canada last August and September. And, Bill spent 12 days hiking through the mountains of Pennsylvania..10 hours a day, tackling some pretty steep terrain, and sleeping on a ground with just a plastic cover over him for protection from rain.
Not your average retired couple. That’s for sure.
