Haul Out Day

"I always feel like The Ghost from Christmas Past when we do this exercise of hauling the heavy chain out on our side deck to rinse it and let it dry." On our primary alone, we have 200' of chain and 120' of rope. Then our secondary anchor has 200' of rope and 30' of chain.

Getting Ready to be Hauled Out

We enjoyed a lovely leisurely couple of days sailing down to Grenada from Bequia, arriving on Palm Sunday.

Grenada's Cruiser's Net

The cruiser’s net in Grenada is always very lively. On Safety and Security this morning we heard that a sailboat coming up from Trinidad had a boatful of eight ‘Venezuelan looking’ men trying to overtake them. The sailboat was able to get away,. but the hull is riddled with bullet holes. They [...]

New Way to Clear into Customs

How do you clear in to Customs, when you arrive at a port and don’t feel like blowing up your dinghy?

Teaching William some Notes

I realized that if I set up my piano early in the morning, then I can play before there is too much sun in the cockpit.

Paddling around Bequia

As my buddy Joan Dwyer would say, “the goal in paddle boarding is to avoid looking like a little old lady pushing a Wegman’s cart.” Actually, I’ll be doing that soon enough as we are heading home in a week.

"Instantly Likeable Guys"

"Here's your micro SD card." Paul had just flown down to meet up with a buddy on Jost Van Dyke and having received word that Moby's wife was in dire need of a memory card, was bringing me a micro SD card for my new underwater camera. After the Salty Dawg Rally at Foxy's, Moby had casually mentioned to stop by for a drink sometime aboard Sapphire. So, just as we were returning from the function at Foxy's, we'd no sooner tied up the dinghy, than we heard the approach of their dinghy engine. "Here we are!" Chris & Paul wearing big smiles. We've since shared dinner at the Rhumb Line, played Hearts 'til past midnight and are planning to join up with them again today, to dinghy on in to town this evening to watch the Super Bowl.
When Moby first met Chris at the Salty Dawg Rally in Hampton, VA, there was an instant connection. Chris, at age 46, had done really well building spec houses in Denver and had decided to retire early so he could start "living the dream." He had sailed for many years and wanted to try a new way of life, so he bought a Bristol 41. That was in August. By October, Chris had sailed "Bristol Head" down to Hampton and was preparing for his first offshore passage down to the Caribbean. Upon determining that Moby had his sistership, Sapphire, he began shadowing Moby to learn everything he could about his new boat. Moby enjoys imparting knowledge, and loves talking about sailing, so the two became pals.
Paul has a lot of sailing experience too, and crews on boats whenever the opportunity arises to get out of Arizona. He wears a do-rag, has a smile like Bruce Willis, and a great laugh. Mortgage trading is his actual profession, but I get the feeling he prefers his more free spirited side, playing the guitar and sailing. Paul, just off a delivery of another boat, met Chris on the dock at Hampton and agreed to help him sail down to Dominica.
As an interesting sideline, the other "crew member" who will be arriving on Wednesday, has actually never sailed before. Chris is on the lookout for Ms. Right. He figured that it will be a good test of character to head off on a 250 mile ocean sail to Dominica. He has never met Marisa before, so it's a pretty daring move on both of their parts.
