Haul Out Day

"I always feel like The Ghost from Christmas Past when we do this exercise of hauling the heavy chain out on our side deck to rinse it and let it dry." On our primary alone, we have 200' of chain and 120' of rope. Then our secondary anchor has 200' of rope and 30' of chain.

Getting Ready to be Hauled Out

We enjoyed a lovely leisurely couple of days sailing down to Grenada from Bequia, arriving on Palm Sunday.

Grenada's Cruiser's Net

The cruiser’s net in Grenada is always very lively. On Safety and Security this morning we heard that a sailboat coming up from Trinidad had a boatful of eight ‘Venezuelan looking’ men trying to overtake them. The sailboat was able to get away,. but the hull is riddled with bullet holes. They [...]

New Way to Clear into Customs

How do you clear in to Customs, when you arrive at a port and don’t feel like blowing up your dinghy?

Teaching William some Notes

I realized that if I set up my piano early in the morning, then I can play before there is too much sun in the cockpit.

Paddling around Bequia

As my buddy Joan Dwyer would say, “the goal in paddle boarding is to avoid looking like a little old lady pushing a Wegman’s cart.” Actually, I’ll be doing that soon enough as we are heading home in a week.

Captain Awesome Strikes Again!

Nurse Caroline
I should have gotten a picture of him with his mask and fins on, and the knife in his teeth! It had been a long day of close hauled sailing. Bumpy, but not awful, by any means. We had departed St. Maarten at 1st light and were just reaching Nevis as the sun was setting.
Just about 1 yard away from hooking a mooring line, Moby yelled, “Caroline! We’ve lost power. I think we’ve run over something, and it’s caught in the propeller.
Moby has always been a quick thinker, and faster still at racing into action. “Put the wheel all the way to the right and lock it.” He instructed, as he dove into the water, coming up for air …”and get me a sharp knife.”
With his mask and fins on, he kept diving down to try to free the line that had wrapped itself around our propeller. We tried winching it free, but to no avail. Turns out it was the tail end of our starboard running back that had come undone and slipped overboard when we were powering through the waves to approach the mooring.
The whole time Captain Awesome was in the water though, I could see his bloody arm and shoulder, cut by the barnacles on the bottom of the boat. Then he’d dive down again to work the line free. I’m thinking, “OK…what can I use to knock out the sharks when they come to check out Moby’s bleeding arm?
He finally managed to cut it free and get the engine started so we could head back and grab a mooring for the night., so no dinner tonight for any underwater creatures lurking out there. Sorry fellas!
(Just as an aside, Moby did comment that this picture will probably NOT help me get into nursing school.)
