Haul Out Day

"I always feel like The Ghost from Christmas Past when we do this exercise of hauling the heavy chain out on our side deck to rinse it and let it dry." On our primary alone, we have 200' of chain and 120' of rope. Then our secondary anchor has 200' of rope and 30' of chain.

Getting Ready to be Hauled Out

We enjoyed a lovely leisurely couple of days sailing down to Grenada from Bequia, arriving on Palm Sunday.

Grenada's Cruiser's Net

The cruiser’s net in Grenada is always very lively. On Safety and Security this morning we heard that a sailboat coming up from Trinidad had a boatful of eight ‘Venezuelan looking’ men trying to overtake them. The sailboat was able to get away,. but the hull is riddled with bullet holes. They [...]

New Way to Clear into Customs

How do you clear in to Customs, when you arrive at a port and don’t feel like blowing up your dinghy?

Teaching William some Notes

I realized that if I set up my piano early in the morning, then I can play before there is too much sun in the cockpit.

Paddling around Bequia

As my buddy Joan Dwyer would say, “the goal in paddle boarding is to avoid looking like a little old lady pushing a Wegman’s cart.” Actually, I’ll be doing that soon enough as we are heading home in a week.

Rainy Days on Sapphire

22 February 2018 | Where we spend rainy days
Caroline
It tends to rain about 15x a day here. Sometimes short sprinkles. But many times off and on all day as it did yesterday. It is a good thing we like each other.
Sapphire is only 41’ in length, so it’s important to be able to co-exist in small spaces without getting on each other’s nerves. Aside from the two cabins, and forward and aft heads, we have the Galley, Nav station, Library and salon, and of course the cockpit, when we need more space.
Thank goodness for projects and our own rituals that we have worked into our days. Moby does countless boat projects in between reading and listening to the marine forecast on his single sideband radio. He is a perfectionist and the projects keep the boat in great shape. I volley between practicing either French or Spanish, watching my sister’s Great Course on Photography, taking pictures, writing, reading, playing piano and fixing meals, plus my morning calisthenics.
Together, we have mastered taking apart Little Dinghy in less than 5 minutes when we see a storm approaching. With winds gusting up to 35 mph, we’d be in trouble if dinghy ever flipped, so we take off the engine and remove all the oars, gas can etc and tie her securely to our stern.
Evenings we read before dinner and enjoy fun and games after dinner.
OK, the sun is out at the moment and Moby has finished replacing a bunch of bungs in our teak deck, so we are off to make a provisioning trip before we set sail tomorrow.
