Haul Out Day

"I always feel like The Ghost from Christmas Past when we do this exercise of hauling the heavy chain out on our side deck to rinse it and let it dry." On our primary alone, we have 200' of chain and 120' of rope. Then our secondary anchor has 200' of rope and 30' of chain.

Getting Ready to be Hauled Out

We enjoyed a lovely leisurely couple of days sailing down to Grenada from Bequia, arriving on Palm Sunday.

Grenada's Cruiser's Net

The cruiser’s net in Grenada is always very lively. On Safety and Security this morning we heard that a sailboat coming up from Trinidad had a boatful of eight ‘Venezuelan looking’ men trying to overtake them. The sailboat was able to get away,. but the hull is riddled with bullet holes. They [...]

New Way to Clear into Customs

How do you clear in to Customs, when you arrive at a port and don’t feel like blowing up your dinghy?

Teaching William some Notes

I realized that if I set up my piano early in the morning, then I can play before there is too much sun in the cockpit.

Paddling around Bequia

As my buddy Joan Dwyer would say, “the goal in paddle boarding is to avoid looking like a little old lady pushing a Wegman’s cart.” Actually, I’ll be doing that soon enough as we are heading home in a week.

Preparations to leave

19 April 2017 | All stripped down with sails folded and bagged
Caroline
"I really didn't think I'd brought this much stuff." I admitted, jam-packing everything into the one rolling duffle we had brought. "This entire suitcase is filled with stuff I never used or wore. "
"I'm not surprised," Moby responded. Annoyingly, he only brought a few t-shirts, boxers and shorts and a swimsuit and he was just fine.
It was so hot down here this year that for me, wearing anything besides a bikini or a lightweight dress was too much.
We have three more days before we'll be hauled out of the water. So we are busy doing boat projects that will be too hot to do once we are on the hard.
Moby overhauled the reefing winch and the centerboard winch, and did the caulking between the teak boards on the side decks. I'm sorting through all our provisions so that we can try to eat our way down to having nothing left, and inventorying what supplies we'll leave on the boat.
During the summer in Grenada the inside of the cabin will be well over 100 degrees, so we need to leave fans running, leave all the cupboard doors ajar and put Reynolds wrap over all the portlights and hatches to keep it a little cooler down below. (Our solar panels generate enough electricity to keep up with the fans) We'll hopefully have a lighter breeze day to be able to take down the sails. It can be a real test to try to remove and fold up a 150% jib in a full gale.
Every square inch of the boat needs to be de-salted and scrubbed clean. Then this weekend, we get to sand Sapphire's bottom in preparation for a new coat of bottom paint.
Having Some Fun Now.
