Most of you are aware that in the past few days the system has been either extremely slow and/or unresponsive, and that over the past few months overall system performance, especially with the gallery, has been less than ideal.
We're taking a number of steps to correct these performance problems and provide the kind of site responsiveness that is expected. A large part of this process means we're going to be changing both hardware and network structure to better and more efficiently handle the load, as well as changing the way the gallery runs and manages photos.
We've begun this already with the introduction of the advanced gallery loader. I encourage all users to use this tool when possible, as it will make your ability to put photos in your gallery a lot easier, and not limit you to just 6 at a time per upload. When you go to add photos to your gallery, this is now the default loader - accept the java or active-x applet and allow it to run.
Part of the hardware & network changes means that we're moving files around this week. This is a large part of the system degradation this week as *several hundred thousand* photos are being duplicated. We expect to have this completed by Friday, Nov 21.
Other downtime might occur occasionally throughout the weekend, but we hope to have the transition completed by Nov 23.
Again, our apologies for inconvenience this week. Its our goal and intention to provide you as members and your visitors with the best possible experience when visiting SailBlogs. We believe we're on the right track as we're continuing to grow and get a lot of positive feedback from members. Part of our growing process is making sure we have the infrastructure necessary to support you and keep that experience rich.
Thank you for all your support,
tim

An advanced gallery uploader is now available in the gallery. It is a Java/Active-X applet that will act as a plug-in to your browser.
This loader will greatly improve your ability to upload images into your gallery albums (if you're a premium member). With this, you will no longer be limited to 6 images, and the loading process will GO MUCH FASTER as some pre-processing of images is completed before images are uploaded to the server.
I encourage all gallery users to try the new loader. The first time you use it, it will take a few minutes to load fully.

A new Wiki system (similar to wikipedia) is being rolled out to hold support and help information about the sailblogs system. This will replace the old Forum, that no one ever used anyway.
SailBlogs Support Wiki
The wiki, i think, is a better way to organize and present information relating to the management of your blog & profile. I'll be adding pages to this as I have time, so be sure to check there for new information before sending support questions.
There is an FAQ, and the main bulk of the pages are organized around managers (Blog Manager, Map Manager, etc) and the tabs within the managers.

Our datacenter had a power distribution unit failure on 3/28. The server lost power abruptly for about 1/2 hour mid-morning. Since that time, we've been working through various issues as a result of this outage.
Logins and page viewing are restored now. (3/29)

The Groups System is on line, in Beta. This is something I've been working on somewhat regularly for a few months now.
This is the first step in the wider goal of expanding the member-to-member connections - the community - of SailBlogs.
Other changes will be coming in the next few months that will leverage this even further, and Groups will probably be able to have photo albums, too.
Speaking of photos, the last few task with the gallery are on deck, too.
