The Barbuda Sessions...and the Italians!
17 March 2008 | Antigua & Barbuda
Happy Easter from the British island of Antigua, about 75 miles south of St Barts. We just spent an amazing 5 days on idyllic island of Barbuda, a day's sail north of here. We were anchored in the turquoise water off an amazing 11-mile long beach with pinkish-white sand, with no one in sight save a few boats and the occasional wild horse that would walk the beach in the morning. Barbuda nurtured our creative souls, as Louis put the finishing touches on a number of songs he's been working on, and we collaborated on another....me writing the lyrics and Louis writing the music. I also finished the 2nd slide show / movie I'd been working on of our trip, and swam every day in the beautiful clear water.
We also had the good fortune to meet a boatload of thirty-something Italians here on a one-week charter. We originally met them back in Antigua, as they were stuck on a sandbar and Louis dinghied over to try to help pull them off. Then we gave them some gas for their dinghy as they had run out, and from there were invited to dinner as "their special guests". We later all ended up here in Barbuda where we got to know them a bit more. One night we all took the only water taxi in town to get across an inland lagoon to get to the only restaurant in town, where we ate something that looked a lot like parrotfish, and then had a drink at the only bar in town, where the proprietor rummaged through his stock to try and find drinks to fit our order. He then joined one of the Italians for a game of backgammon, after which we walked the desolate, sandy streets of the town of Coddrington waiting for our water taxi. One of the funnier sights were 2 young kids sitting on rock at night with their computers...apparently this was an internet "hot spot" and they were surfin the net.
When the time came to leave Barbuda we were a bit sad...the end of the "Barbuda Sessions", as Louis named them. We sailed back to Antigua, a very peaceful, fun sail with 15k winds and mellow 4' seas. I hung out on the foredeck, thinking of our friend Spencer who loves sailing and made him a "sailing mix" on my IPOD.
