Wild nights in Brazilian waters :
28 November 2010 | Brazilian coast
Henriette
Whaaw! Last night was quite something! It was pretty wild! At about 12.30am we had to change direction to go a little bit more north (NNW) following the Brazilian coast line and the wind was going bananas at about 24kts! (remember we have sort of getting used to the friendly winds of 7 - 15kt!)The Genoa was up but we were doing over 8.7 kts - the speed was not as intimidating as the mountainous (?really?) swells that was coming from the starboard side and was making the poor Scolamanzi dancing from side to side with enormous bounces and splashes!...with the odd item flying through the saloon and water splashes on my laptop! (It was closed so I hope it will be ok!)
Thankfully Johann was on duty then - it lasted for about 3-4 hours and by the time the sun was rising it all calmed down a bit but we are still facing winds of between 18 and 22! It makes great sailing and speed up the now less exciting stretch for us! Sleeping was just about impossible (you can tell by looking at the faces this morning! Ha!) with all the banging up and down and big rolls from side to side - even lying on your back will get you on your stomach at some point whether you like it or not!
We had our top speed yesterday late afternoon with the Gennaker up in 17-18kt winds of 12.6kts!! Now for you who do not know - that is around 22-25km/h which for a vessel like this (or any vessel on water for that matter) is pretty fast! It literally felt like we were flying!
Last night was Movie night on Scolamanzi - Ben has become a much respected Director of Movies! He is just brilliant! The nice thing is that he is using footage and pictures from all the cameras and video's on board (and Jonkie is one mean photographer..a very serious one too!)to put it all together - I can't wait to show you guys this! Just fantastic! It is an added bonus to become an actress while on holidays!...a very low paid one unfortunately
Our next waypoint is at 07°54'063S 054°00'527W about 1080nm from here and a good 111H 52m 08s at this speed to get there!! ha ha! Tell you what... You find it on Google Earth and... I will see if we can find the real McCoy!
