Bequia to Tobago Cays
13 April 2011 | Tobago Cays
Henriette -Sunny and slightly windy
The enticing waters of Tobago Cays.... almost electric-BLUE ....will forever be imprinted in my mind...to refer back to on the dry dusty days at home....which I believe has become more mouldy this season!
The anchorage at Tobago this time was right next to the grazing area of the giant leather back turtles and big stingrays! That is something we have sort of neglected the first time around with too many beautiful distractions around....that was our very first assignment this time round as we hit the waters of Tobago Cays...it was quite an experience. We not only hovered above many of the big turtles and stingrays but also came across a huge school of thousands of foot long fish (no idea what they were – but they were silver-gray ...if that helps?) ... but a school big enough that you could not see the end of it...it was so much fun startling them just to see how their synchronised pattern gets disrupted just to very quickly form an in sync swimming mass again! We were playing around until our fingers felt like corps transplants and had to hurry out to the boat for a hot shower ...not that the water is cold...but one tend to hang around for an hour or more not using much energy ...
The next snorkel was as big a treat ...we went straight to the most northern end of the reef where we could go to the drop-off of the reef...the abyss was so sudden and deep! The contrast between the beautiful shallow reef with masses of coloured coral and fish and the deep blue dark unknown was absolutely breathtakingly beautiful! Also a little scary at times...we were in at high tide and the breaking waves were not too heavy...but we could feel the urgency not to stay to long as you do get tired of fighting the waves and current ... but the 30min there was enough for me to make that my last snorkel of the trip ...and the last around the Caribbean for a long time to come....we had a very special sundowner (a drink at sunset) that night with a bit of sadness in it too...realising the end of the beautiful deep of the blues of the Caribbean will not be seen for a while...well, the nostalgia was short lived when a French charter boat started a dancing party on the top of their cockpit’s roof!!!....... in their bikini’s mixed with Rum punches! Ha!Ha!!! Their exhilarating energy, the music, the freedom of wide open spaces of blue water and ...just enjoying life was enough to brake the sombre mood of saying good bye to Tobago ....and we end the night in a festive mood...having some loud music of our own! This place has more to give than what you think...the tressure of it is really hidden inside the explorer!...it’s up to you to unlock it and find it!
We were off to Union Island ..only for the day ...planning to go and anchor and overnight at Petite St Vincent....another favourite of ours...
