It is officially day number 5. We are about 500 nm away from Costa Rica. The winds have been light and variable and the seas have been very benign.... it has been a very great way to get our sea legs and to get into the "groove" of offshore sailing. We were all waiting for that moment of being in the "groove" when we realized, we have been in the "groove" since we left!! No adjustments have been necessary. Does that mean that we are all "Groovey"?! With 5 night watches spread over 4 crew, it really isn't any hardship at all. We all get at least 6 straight hours of sleep (sometimes 9) and the days are easily filled with catching up on reading, learning about the newest gadget (Deb got a GoPro for her birthday) or grabbing a nap. The meals have been nothing short of spectacular! The freezers are both full of fine cuts of beef, pork, lamb and of course chicken. The fruits and vegetables seem to be holding up very well. We check to see which vegetables etc need eating and plan from there. The weather has been very nice so far. Clear, blue skies until this afternoon. We are seeing some cloud cover and saw a squall on the horizon. It broke up before we got to it! Whew! The temperature is between 90 & 95 farenheit (35+ in celcius) but we are all staying out of the sun and keep hydrated. We have seen lots & lots of Pacific Spotted dolphins - are they ever playful! They dart & dodge all around the boat. The other day, the boys had the watermaker all apart (seems the electric fresh water flush button wasn't working properly) and the girls were on the foredeck dolphin watching when suddenly the very, very quiet fishing line went crazy! Fish on!! The boys came rushing up and the girls came to the cockpit.... wow, what was on the line? It took about 30-40 minutes ( or longer?) to get the line reeled in. What we saw on the hook was the most beautiful Yellowfin tuna!! It was 25-30 lbs - that's a lot of sushi! So all watermaker repairs stopped and out came the fish filet knife. Two quick slits behind the pectoral fin and a line snuggly tied around its tail and it was ready to drag behind the boat for a wee while. We had the freshest and most delicious quick seared tuna ever! We even managed to squeeze the other half into the freezer for another day. No fishing lines out today!
