After our big day Gibraltar put on a two day music festival in our honor! Wow! Over 80 bands and musicians for two days under blue sky and sun and a mild evening air. Simply fantastic! We enjoyed the atmosphere very much. Coming from Berlin, this felt properly small and villagy, I must say. People on folding chairs in front of fantastic bands such as the Stereophonics? Felt quirky to me. We got to know some great new artists but also had to discover that we are getting a bit old. Some bands send the teenies screaming and dancing and we just wondered, who they might be :-) We had a great few days with Pat and Duncan and enjoyed the Samji hospitality very much.
We did not think poor old Scrabbler had to go into the slings so early again. Ah well...'Lovely Sopromar' was not able to change the seal so James had to cancel his long arranged dental appointment and hang head first for a few hours in the engine compartment. Poor James. I went to town and had my nails done, as you do! A good 5 hours later of she goes again into the water. Round two! Fingers crossed! Now she has to float sadly again in Lagos Marina until maybe the end of September.
Something has gone wrong! The measurements were off and now we have a giant caterpillar crawling around our mizzen rigging (John's words). So, Jana spent a while up the mizzen. Cleaning the wires and the mast of dust and grit from the yard, putting the second more sensible wrinkle on and changing the giant baggywrinkle. Although we had a few people stop by here in Alvor admiring the big fluff. Now we only have to add some above the spreaders on the main and we are fluffed up and ready to go downwind.
Although we had purchased the solar panels a while ago, they were only temporarily wired in for the summer sail in 2014 and after that just hung as pretty decoration on the guard rails. Well, now it is all done and blimey! James keeps going down below to watch the charge going in. Strange new hobby…Anyway, at this rate we either start selling power or start glowing!
not quite but only thanks to the bilge pumps. The 'dripless' Volvo shaft seal gave up after only three years and just about 200 engine hours. Unbelievable! Now our little sailing plan changed and we are not able to sail to Ayamonte as planned but hang out in Alvor just to hoist out again on Monday just to change something that should not have to be changed. But on a positive note, all our hull repairs, new additions, seacocks, keel cooler and so on are perfectly dry and wonderful! Overall not a bad outcome considering the work done.
Took a while but today is the day! We are dumping Scrabbler back into the water. Wonder, if she still remembers, how to float? But of course after fiddling with more than nine holes and ex-holes in the hull, the main worry will be: Has the Dark Master of the Art of Fibreglassing succeeded? We are of course not finished, but who needs running water from all taps or connected sinks in all heads or a painted non-slip deck or a new working fridge or new clean halyards or a clean boats? All overrated! Being on the water is the aim today.
and one last bag after one last night sleep under a solid brick and concrete roof. Blimey! The last few days I thought it will never end. More and more bits appeared from nowhere. James is gone to sleep in nice hotels and I have to finish off The Move by myself. We live so relatively uncluttered and in comparison with most of our friends and family almost frugal but still I had to go begging for banana boxes at Pingo Doce day after day. They sell 4 to 5 boxes of bananas per day. Important fact to know in case one moves. Not sure, how many I accumulated in the end but it is a lot. And since the aft cabin is not liveable yet, a lot had to stay packed and lives in the storage unit I had planned to give up months ago. The apartment feels sterile, soulless (not that it ever had much of that in the first place) and very empty. Hard to believe we managed to fill it, had up to 20 people baking and BBQing in it at times and two dogs and two friends staying with us for weeks. This chapter is now closed. We'll see what comes next!
Despite having been careful and taping everything up dust went everywhere of course. Started cleaning the galley and moving back on board. Seems that over time we have indeed moved out almost completely. The moving back is taking so much more time than I thought and I can't believe how much stuff there is in the apartment! What happened? And all this used to be on Scrabbler?
Again! We have so much to do but we can't stop! And look at this!! Absolute mean dice have given me all of four vowels. Nasty, but I got them after all. And look how pretty the result is. I am for extra points for beauty but James won't let me have them!
