Noumea to the Isle of Pines
24 September 2012 | 22 28'S:166 48'E, Ouen Island
After clearing back into New Caledonia, this time by air, Sea Child was reprovisioned and ready to sail SE to the Isle of Pines two days later. The weather has brought sunshine, sparkling on the water and gentle SE trades, to 15 knots. While this is a headwind for Sea Child, tacking upwind being her slowest point of sail, we continue onward toward the most southeastern part of the country. We untied the docklines around 1pm local time, and after 4 hours of sailing a somewhat slow and leisurely 5 knots, we dropped anchor at an idyllic cove just off Ouen Island. A picturesque little island, Ouen has a dramatic landscape punctuated by veins of jade-green soil here and there. The glow of Noumea could be seen after sunset, in the distance, her lights a reminder of the 150,000 people who live there. As we progress forward to the Isle of Pines, we are captivated by the tourism information about sailing in New Caledonia, where the literature refers to the Isle of Pines as the " jewel among the jewels" where white sand beaches surround turquois lagoons. As we motorsail this morning toward the isles, about 30 NM to our SE, we carefully maneuver around the reefs and rocks that are scattered among these waters. We expect this journey to take us all day today, and we look forward to discovering these "jewels" of New Caledonia. We remain pleasantly surprised at the beauty of New Caledonia, her rugged landscape and jade-tinged waters. We look forward to a new discovery, just ahead on the other side of the horizon.
