Day 8 Tenerife to Barbados

26 November 2016 | Atlantic Ocean
Gillian
At last - a good night with some decent sleep. We still had lots of rain showers but the wind was milder and things were a lot more comfortable on board. The sun was out briefly during the day and the wind has swung to south west so that we are sailing into headwinds. Once more the watermaker has been causing problems so today Neil tried every trick in the book to get it sorted, and after a couple of hours managed to get it working again. Relief! No rationing of water yet, thank goodness. We had managed to fill a bucket of rainwater during the night so Jane and I took the opportunity to wash our hair - first in seawater and then in fresh water. Feels wonderful! Again Neil caught a Mahi Mahi but was not able to land it. So frustrating! Jane caught a fish his morning - a flying fish landed in the cockpit on her watch. Tomorrow we reach our first waypoint i.e. 20 degrees north and 30 degrees west - the place where the butter melts and we head west. Odd things are placed in cupboards on board e.g eggs and bananas in the microwave. Towels in the pots cupboard, tea towels in the booze cupboard, iPad and vhf also in the microwave! Guess why! We have done 127nm in the last 24 hours and currently have 10 knots of wind. Our speed is 5 knots. Postscript: Neil has just caught a small dark trevally like fish - enough for two meals!
