Yes, we are finally here after what seemed a very long passage. We motored through the night and dropped our anchor at 8am local time (UTC -9.5). The island is beautiful with steep rugged cliffs and green lush bush. The little bay we are anchored in has quite a bit of swell rolling in so we have dropped a stern anchor with the help of another yachtie on his dinghy. Two attempts and we got it right. We took the dinghy ashore and went into the little shop at the gas station to buy something to eat, and I hauled out the South Pacific francs I have kept since our visit to New Caledonia in 2010. To my surprise the cashier laughed and said the notes are old and they have new ones now - what a waste! Our agent, Sandra met us and drove us to the Police station to clear in, after which we were free to explore the little town. And a little town it sure is! Two little stores, a bank, post office, tourist office and a marae. The locals seem pretty laid back and speak mostly French, with some English. All were very friendly. Quite a good selection of dried goods in the store, and lots of French delicacies such as pate and good cheese. But oh so expensive! We tried to buy a SIM card so we could connect to the internet but the post office had sold out and none will be available until Monday. So it looks like we will have to rely on the satellite phone for communication, and will not be able to Skype for a while. We had a hamburger and a beer at a little snack bar. Not the best and very expensive too, so I don't think we will be eating out much here. It was a long hot walk back to the harbour, but we were fortunate to get offered a ride by two other yachties who had hired a car for the day. We motored the dinghy around onto a little beach to fill up a container with brown water, so that I could wash my hair. The water in the anchorage is also brown so we weren't keen to swim. Now for a nice glass of rose, a light meal and to bed without having to wake up for watches. Bliss! We will be here until Thursday and then plan to explore some of the other bays on this island.
