Midnight sojourn
14 June 2017 | Taiohae Bay, Nuka Hiva, Marquesas
Gillian
Our trip from Anoha bay to Taiohae was pretty unpleasant. Nasty swells and beating against the wind, so it was quite a relief when we came round the south west corner of Nuka Hiva and sailed more comfortably into the large spacious bay of Taiohae. A bit of a swell in the anchorage but not too bad, and it was good to see a couple of other boats we have met along the way, and to have the time to catch up with them. On the shore we found the yachtie gathering place, - a snack bar with free wifi (albeit slow) - with an enchanting Polynesian flavour. Chicken BBQ on the go, breadfruit cooked in the coals and then mashed, and guitars strumming and singing (Neil described it as Kapa Haka with a banjo sound). Ahh so familiar to New Zealand and the South Pacific, and we felt at home. The town is delightful. Spread out along the beach with houses hugging the hills amongst thick flowering bush. We took a walk and found three Magazins (grocery stores), and hurray we found a post office who could sell us a SIM card! Unfortunately only 2G but at least I can get my emails. There is an attractive little fruit & vege market near the dock, so we have stocked up with cucumber, eggplant, carrots, potatoes and fruit. No tomatoes or lettuce to be found though. We leave tonight for the 4 day passage to the Tuamotos with Makemo atoll our first stop. We have to time our entry perfectly to enter the pass at slack tide, so with that in mind we are leaving at midnight tonight so that we arrive at Makemo at 9am on Saturday. If we are delayed we will be able to wait around in the daylight for the next slack tide at 3pm in the afternoon.
