Day 5 passage to Minerva Reef
05 May 2013 | South Pacific Ocean

We were expecting strong winds so prepared by reefing the main before dark and setting up the staysail. During the 7pm sked with the other boats a few boats reported nasty squally conditions and very soon after it hit us. Winds up to 30 knots, driving rain and then all over in a few minutes! A bit of excitement to add to the night. The weather gods but have thought we needed a bit of waking up. Found two flying fish in the cockpit this morning. Must of been a big shock for them to hit a hard object like our boat. We continue to make good speed averaging over 6 knots. Must be a combination of new rigging, new mainsail and ideal wind and sea conditions. Neil likes to think that his trimming of the sails have a lot to do with it - mmmm. We can see a large ketch sailing on our starboard side - too far to see any details but they seem to be doing the same speed. May need to keep a look out for them tonight. Thanks for all the comments on facebook that we can read via email - its fun to share this journey. If anyone is posting comments on the blog site thanks for that too - we will be able to read them once we get internet in Fiji.
