An Audience With God

We've seen conflicting information on the various technical aspects of Seaforth. One sales brochure claimed different dimensions and tankage figures than another and each different person who knew the boat seemed to have slightly varied numbers for all sorts of specifications. In addition, Ade had been trying to come up with a way to map the various storage locations onboard and create an inventory system with items, quantities and locations to assist in provisioning and storage. And for my part, I would really like to have a half model of Seaforth made so that visitors on board can see her beautiful underwater lines ... well actually, so I can look at her fantastic shape and marvel at my good fortune in owning a fabulous sail boat.
We figured the best way to get some definitive answers and to help with inventories and half models was to get a set of drawings for the boat. We talked to the guy who built Seaforth in 1988 and while he thought he had some drawings for her, it turned out that he didn't. We tried several times to contact the designer Laurie Davidson, but hadn't had much luck until one day I received a very pleasant email in response to my query. Mr Davidson said he thought he might have some drawings but that they would be amongst a large pile of drawings that he had not yet sorted and that he would, one day soon, sort through his drawings and let me know when or if he found anything useful.
I wasn't entirely hopeful, but was very pleasantly surprised when I received another email to say that the drawings had been found and that we should come visit and pick the drawings up so that we could arrange to have copies made.
Laurie was so much older than I remembered him being and was now quite hard of hearing, but to be fair it was many years since I'd last seen him. He was very humble and polite and helpful. The man whose creative genius had not only produced a beautiful boat like Seaforth, but had created powerful and legendary race boats and an internationally acclaimed brilliance in terms of yacht design was just a nice elderly man. A bit like getting an audience with God and finding out that he's just like your Grandad.
