Seaforth - The Holiday of a Lifetime

Letting Go

03 September 2012 | Auckland, New Zealand
Steve
Part of moving on is letting go. Letting go of the conventional, letting go of the "stuff" we accumulate and fill our lives with, letting go of the familiar to reach for the new.

In 2002 we finished building a sports car ... a Lotus 7 replica produced by Fraser Cars that we bought as a kitset and that we built up and customised to our specifications. At the time, that car represented freedom to us. It was freedom to have the features that we wanted designed into it, the freedom of superior performance, the freedom to flaunt convention and "normality" when it comes to cars, and the freedom that comes from turning even a mundane transportation event into an exciting road-trip adventure.

In order to transition from a terrestrial life to an aquatic one we must shed the trappings of land-based living. We have no use for a car - even one as personalised and exciting as our little Fraser was - on a boat. So in order to grab the new prize, the new goal of freedom (long-term cruising on a boat) we have to let go of our previous definition of freedom (the car).

Sadly we have sold our Fraser. We have let go of something that we had poured so much of ourselves into. The sadness is tempered, however, by knowing that she has gone to someone who appreciates her for what she is and what she can do and who will look after her.

Nobody said it would be easy. Let's just hope its worth it in the end.

About: So we're a couple in our 40s and we've decided to abandon a responsible life with careers and stuff, sell the farm and the cars and go sailing instead. Stuff it, I might die before I get to retire so let's have fun now .... there might be time to work later.
Extra: Oh yeah ... we've got 2 dogs as well .... border collies (cute!). That's gonna make life interesting on a boat isn't it? Oh and in case you were wondering, that isn't a photo of either of us in the string vest ... or anyone we know either.
