And Miles to go Before I Sleep
15 October 2008
While Robert Frost created this line in his poem "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening", it is anything but cold where we are but we still have to put on miles. We loved our short stay in Solomons Island. We did some business in the morning; the most aggravating thing about cruising is trying to take care of land based business. As I indicated, I bought a pay as you go phone from Wally Mart. I ran out of time real quick and it can only be recharged by either buying a card (at Wally Mart) or adding time from a credit card - has to be a US card of course. Well I have many cards and one in US dollars but it is a Canadian Card. I purchased a prepaid credit card at an AAA in Kennebunkport in order to activate my kindle so I used this earlier for the phone but it's out of money. So I contact AAA hoping to recharge the credit card by adding money from my Canadian Card. Well, you guessed it; can't be done. So I call the very efficient agent at the AAA in Kennebunkport and she's able to do it semi-manually for me. So this simple thing took many calls and probably an hour an a half.
Ultimately we leave Solomons around 11:00, heading for Mill Creek in Wicomico Creek. The weather is very pleasant and for we wear shorts and t-shirts. We beat the tidal current all day so we start our way into the creek around 5:00 and by the time we finally wend our way into the anchorage, it's 6:00. Our friends Dave and Janet from Whiski Mac as well as Chris and Bonnie from Carpe Diem are anchored here. It is absolutely spectacular and reminds us of our cherished Flowers' Cove at the head of Grand Lake. We have supper and are invited to Whiski Mac for cocktails and chat around 7:30.
A few words about Chris and Penny. We met them fleetingly in Northeast Harbour; they had just completed their transit from Yarmouth to N/E Harbour, so they were justifiably spaced out. We were anchored next to them in Chesapeake City and saw their boat again in Annapolis. They have a C&C 34; a sistership to our friends Ellis and Karen. They are from Vancouver but they kept their boat in Lake Winnipeg. They have done many things to ready it for cruising and we were told they were documents in either the March or May issue of Cruising World. They shipped their boat to Great Lakes and have been on it for five months. While we have just over a thousand miles; they have 5000! Their intention is to cruise the coast of the US, Bahamas, Caribbean, through the Panama Canal and eventually back to Vancouver. Interesting and focused folks.
We have a pleasant evening and when we head back to Sea Sharp around 10:00 it is still t-shirt weather.
Whiski Mac and Carpe Diem intend to stay for another day but we want to move on; "And miles to go before I sleep.".
