Frost on the Pumpkin
27 November 2008
We leave Barefoot Landing at a respectable 10:00 in the morning with only a short day ahead of us. We transit a very interesting section of the ICW, with little indication of habitation. This area is primarily through the Waccamaw River which banks are lined with abandoned rice fields and oaks draped with Spanish Moss; a sight typical of one's conception of the south. Actually our cruising guide clarifies that this Spanish Moss is neither Spanish nor moss. Rather it is an air plant in the pineapple family.
Anyway, we are virtually alone as we wend our way down this attractive river. There are many creeks with serpentine their way off this main river. We find one called Cow House Creek Anchorage and pull in around 2:30 and set the hook. There is no boat, nor for that matter, any habitation of any sort in sight. It is also very quiet. It reminds us of the several great creeks we used to frequent in the Saint John River like Hole-in-the-Wall, Palmer Creek, Mount Creek and one of our favourites for our Spring and Fall trip to or from Fredericton, Swan Creek.
We watch the Prince of Tides which is a great flick filmed not far from here. To bed early expecting another cold night. We wake up to frost everywhere. In fact the deck has a half inch of frost over everything. We cannot see out of the dodger/enclosure and the deck is treacherously slippery so rather than our early leave, we have to wait until about 8:45 for the sun to come up sufficiently to melt the frost. It is, however, peaceful and beautiful.
