Lots to be Thankful For
27 November 2008
Today is Thanksgiving in the US and it is a very big deal. We leave our snug but very cold anchorage destined for a reportedly neat little place called Georgetown, some twenty easy miles ahead. It is an easy run down this pleasant river and the day warms up significantly as we make our way. Shortly after noon we make this town which is dominated by a large paper mill; some people apparently complain about the sulphuric odor but coming from Bathurst, we simply called it "the smell of prosperity".
The harbour is compact with several marinas but we choose to anchor right in front of the downtown. We scout out the town with many neat shops, virtually all closed for Thanksgiving. We do find a restaurant which boasts a free Thanksgiving dinner. Fits our budget!
We do for a long walk around this downtown which is apparently the third oldest city in South Carolina. It is very pretty, with gracious, well-kept homes and streets canopied with great oaks. We certainly feel we're in the deep south.
So we go to the free dinner and it is fine. We do feel, however that our meal mates are folks less fortunate and who probably don't have other places to go to. Nonetheless, we have a good meal and go for another short walk to soak is as much of this pleasant town as we can in the short time we're here.
