We're in Florida
15 December 2008
We get up early at Ft. George River with the intention of getting to St. Augustine as early as possible. We understand that this is a wonderful city; the oldest in Florida.
As we work our way out of this river (really a creek) we (read Bob) run aground. Not to worry, it was a very soft grounding and the tides rising. So a combination of engine power, rising tide and shifting our weight on to the bow gets us off in a few minutes.
Our trip today is a combination of winding marsh creeks and die-straight land cuts. Along these land cuts are many expensive homes, all, of course, with their own docks. At one point we cross the St. Johns River (not to be confused with our own St. John River). We understand that this mighty river which leads to Jacksonville, several miles up the river, has many more miles beyond of scenic cruising, much like our own version.
Despite the several bridges we need to transit including two opening bridges, with a very favourable tide, we get to St. Augustine around 2:00 and go to the St. Augustine Municipal Marine, right downtown. It's a great marina and we have high expectations for this history-steeped town.
We quickly tie up, get the boat settled and decide to explore the downtown. It certainly does not disappoint and we are awed by the amazing architecture and beautiful grounds. More to come....
