Made it through the Cape Cod Canal

Sorry for the late start in Blog postings. The trip is going well and extremely exciting. So far, my friend Morgan has accompanied me the whole way, very helpful. He's a great sailor and we get along great. We sailed from Portland to Boston overnight. It took us 25 hours. Very good wind, nothing uncomfortable, and yet we did almost 6 knots the whole way. We made great time until we had to beat upwind into Mass Bay to get into Boston Harbor. It was grueling. From Boston we sailed to Plymouth and experienced extremely heavy weather, with lightening and rain, and wind speeds gusting to 30 knots. Until the sails were reefed it was very hairy and broaching was a definite possibility. It was an exceptional experience! I stayed in Plymouth for a few days and made some friends. I got invited to the "Woo" a hip young church by one of my new friends Haily. I had a great time and met some wonderful people. One of the guys I met was on a journey walking across the US to raise money for starving children in the name of God.
After leaving Plymouth we sailed south trying to make the Cape Cod Canal before the tides changed against us. We were head into 20 knot winds and were double reefed. Unfortunately we did not make the Canal and had to spend the night at Sandwich Marina. In the morning we shot the canal and were greeted on the other side by dense fog and huge waves which tossed the boat around like a rag doll. We decided to take refuge in Red Brook harbor which I have stayed at twice before. We dropped anchor, and went digging for clams to accompany our salmon we had bought in Sandwich. Alas we made a killing of clams and had ourselves a sea food feast! The wind picked up all night, and I didn't get much sleep because of constant anchor watching. And just as my instincts told me, the anchor began to drag around 9 am. We decided to pull up anchor and move to the mooring field since Morgan had to catch a bus anyway, and leaving the boat at anchor was really questionable. So here I am at a mooring safe and sound waiting for the weather to clear. Tomorrow I will try to make it to Newport RI if the weather allows.
