Sequitur

Late on Wednesday night, the 13th of October, I went by taxi with Edi to the airport in Callao, where she checked-in and was immediately confirmed to Toronto, with stand-by status onward to Vancouver. I dropped her off at the entrance to the international departures formalities, and then rejoined the taxi driver for the returned ride to La Punta. I arrived back onboard Sequitur a few minutes to midnight.

On Thursday morning I received an email from Edi that she had cleared through Customs in Toronto, but couldn't make the gate in time to get the 1000 flight to Vancouver. An hour-and-a-half later she emailed that she was confirmed on the noon flight, but that she still had no news about the baby. She said that Grandma might just win the race to Vancouver.

Edi's first daughter, Amy had emailed on Wednesday morning that her time had come, and that she was off to the hospital to give birth to our first granddaughter. Amy's due date was Halloween, and Edi had assumed that since both of her daughters, Amy and Genevieve had been over-term, Amy would also be late, a week or two into November. Edi had been planning on flying to Vancouver the first week of November, but Mother and Mother Nature seemed to out-fox Grandma.

At 0115 on Friday morning I received an email from Edi reporting her safe arrival in Vancouver, her quick SkyTrain ride to the loft, dropping her luggage and hopping back on the SkyTrain, then the SeaBus and then a bus to Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver, arriving in time have a quick chat with Amy prior to her being wheeled in to deliver.


Grandma had beaten the baby by only 20 minutes. Little Annelies Marise is "so gorgeous and has little dimples on her cheeks, has dark hair and is very pretty", according to Edi's email. "Mother and baby are doing fine." Later on Friday morning Bram, the proud father, emailed me photos from his iPhone and said the baby came into the world at 2828 grams.
