Cape Capricorn & Rosslyn Bay
25 April 2012
April 18, 2012 7:30 am--out of Pancake Creek and north to Cape Capricorn. We had light winds, 5-10 knots over the stern, so we motorsailed again (which seems to be the norm for heading up the east coast). We had a nice day except for the jib slatted back and forth for most of the day. We also motorsailed right through a cargo ship parking lot off Gladstone, which is a major coal exporting harbor. We counted forty large ore carrying ships off Gladstone-- and we saw two BIG vessels coming in. You might say we had a 'plethora' of ore freighters! By the way, to any Aussies who might read this--your country is being shipped in bits and pieces to China and one day Australia will be an island off of Hong Kong! We arrived at Cape Capricorn at three pm and tucked in behind the point. We had been told by various sailors that the anchorage at Cape Cap was rolly-- but it did not seem too bad, until that night. At night the current held Serenity stern to the wind waves wrapping around the point--so poor Serenity got her bottom smacked all night long! An interesting note about cruising the 'Coral Coast' as it is called from Bundaberg to Cape York, is that you can have phone and internet service if you stay close to the mainland. While underway I checked our email--very strange. After one night at Cape Cap we decided to head for a berth at Keppel Isle Marina in Rosslyn Bay. We had been told by our frinds, Paul and Sue in Bundy, that the marina was fun as they had a courtesy car you could use for free. But there was a surprise in store for us at the marina!
