We have spent over two weeks in Bora Bora-- snorkeling, hiking, biking, walking, kayaking, scuba diving, watching a solar eclipse, going to the Hieva festival, and generally having fun. We scuba dived with sharks, saw a lionfish, and a stone fish. We went twice to the Hieva Festival--the annual singing and dancing Polynesian competition. Our friends, Bill and Becky from California, joined us and we promised them that each day would be an adventure-- they were not dissapointed. Bora Bora is a major tourist destination-- the cheapest room at the Hilton resort is $750 a night. But we found spots that were quiet and secluded-- especially in the east lagoon. We anchored behind Toopua Motu, and off the pearl farm in the West lagoon, and behind Motu Piti Aau in the East Lagoon. We also spent numerous nights on a mooring at the Bora Bora Yacht Club-- the owners, Jessica and Teiva Gow are very friendly and helpful and the gin and tonics really hit the spot. Note to Cruisers: We downloaded a guide to Polynesia and the area between Bora Bora and Tonga called 'Mr.John's Guide to Polynesia' and 'The Dangerous Middle'. These guides have been of tremendous help navigating and anchoring in Polynesia. We would highly recommend printing a copy of these guides if you are following in our wake. As much fun as Bora Bora has been-- our visas are up and we have the old itch to get a move on. We say goodbye to Bill and Becky and head out the pass to our next adventure-- a three day and night passage to Rarotonga!
