On the Road--Rotorua
03 February 2011
As we stepped out of our car in Rotorua we noticed an odd smell. It smelled like burning electrical/ sulfer/ burnt wet dog hair--I checked the car over. It wasn't the car--it was all the thermal vents (fumerols) around Rotorua. We went river sledging in Rotorua. River sledging involves riding down the rapids on a hard boggie board wearing a wet suit, helmet, and booties. It was very physically challenging-- and a hoot! We also went to a Maori dinner show which was fun, but the tour of the animal park afterwards-- kiwi birds, tuatara lizards, kea birds, and monster trout was better. The next day we went luging down a mountain in Rotorua. This involved riding a gondola up the mountain, then sitting on a sled with wheels and riding down a cement track. The views of lake Rotorua from the top of the mountain were awesome. Rotorua was a stinky, fun town--with lots of extreme sports and fun things to do. Also, almost all of the motels in Rotorua have private jacuzzi tubs in their rooms-- to soak those sore muscles-- aaahhhhh!
