THE ADVENTURES OF S/V SERENITY AND HER CREW
On the Road--Rotorua

Here I am riding a wave while sledging--what a ball!

As we stepped out of our car in Rotorua we noticed an odd smell. It smelled like burning electrical/ sulfer/ burnt wet dog hair--I checked the car over. It wasn't the car--it was all the thermal vents (fumerols) around Rotorua. We went river sledging in Rotorua. River sledging involves riding down the rapids on a hard boggie board wearing a wet suit, helmet, and booties. It was very physically challenging-- and a hoot! We also went to a Maori dinner show which was fun, but the tour of the animal park afterwards-- kiwi birds, tuatara lizards, kea birds, and monster trout was better. The next day we went luging down a mountain in Rotorua. This involved riding a gondola up the mountain, then sitting on a sled with wheels and riding down a cement track. The views of lake Rotorua from the top of the mountain were awesome. Rotorua was a stinky, fun town--with lots of extreme sports and fun things to do. Also, almost all of the motels in Rotorua have private jacuzzi tubs in their rooms-- to soak those sore muscles-- aaahhhhh!

This is all we can show of the sets for the new movie The Hobbit.

From Hamilton we drove to Waitomo to tour the glow worm caverns. At first, we thought this might be boring--but we were very surprized. The worms lit up the roof of the caverns like the night sky at sea--well, not quite as spectacular. After walking and floating through the glow worm caves we had a guided tour of some other limestone caverns. These stalagtite/stalagmite strewn caverns were astounding! After the caves we drove to Matamata where Hobbiton is located. Now, we were prepared to be disappointed with Hobbiton as we had heard that most of the sets had been removed. What we did not know was that the Hobbiton sets had been rebuilt for the new movie--The Hobbit. In fact, they had remade the sets even better and made new ones for the Hobbit. Although we took numerous photos, we cannot post them as we had to sign a confidentiallity agreement--and they made it clear they would sue us if we posted photos. But for two crazy old hobbit freaks--we had a ball! After a very full day, we drove on to Rotorua--the extreme sport capital of New Zealand.

Sherry on the trail to New Chums Beach. To get to the beach we had to cross a stream (really a river), hike along a rocky cove, through a jungle, then drop down to the beach--but it was worth it.
