July 11, 2011 Our best friends, Bill and Becky, came from California to visit Serenity and her crew. We have had many great adventures together--and Fiji will be another adventure. We had Mohammed pick us up in his 'luxury' carriage ( appearently they do not put shocks on the cars in Fiji, or so it seems), and we were off on our road trip to Nadi (pronouned Nandi-- I do not know why, but "d" in Fiji is pronounced 'nd'). Nadi has a population of around 31,000 and is a vibrant mix of Fijian and Indian cultures. Our first stop was the Hindu Temple which is amazingly ornate. It seemd that every nook and space was filled with paintings or statues. The colors were amazing and reminded us of Mexican art. We strolled around the temple listening to Hinu music being played on speakers. Next stop was Denarau Island which is a lot like Hawaii with mega hotels and big sprawling golf courses and condos. We had lunch in Denarau at the marina, then headed to the market which is bigger than the one in Lautoka. What a cultural experience the municipal markets are--full of people, produce (some unrecognizable), noises, and exotic spice smells. We stopped at the New World super market--they have some U.S. brand goods. On the way back to Serenity we stopped at the Sleeping Giant Gardens. The Sleeping Giant is a reclining man's profile on a mountain ridge which is visible from the Queen's Road. The gardens were beautiful--orchids, flowers of all types, and trees. We were exhausted from our Nadi adventure, and returned to Serenity around 6 pm. We left the next day for Musket Cove in the Mamanuca Island Group.
