THE ADVENTURES OF S/V SERENITY AND HER CREW
Scawfell Island
04/27/2012

April 23, 2012 After a fun afternoon with Brad, and exploring Middle Percy, we tucked in for a peaceful night. Up at 5:30 am and away by 6 am-- we are on our way to Scawfell Island. You might be wondering how we pick the islands that we stop at for each night on our way up north. Well, we have four cruising guides and multiple blogs as references-- but our best source of info came from some of the crusiers we had met at Bundaberg. We met Dan and Yo from S/V Jacana at the Bundaberg Cruising Yacht Club BBQ. They had just completed a circumnavigation and Dan sat down with us and went through his personal log--telling us the places to stop at and the places to avoid. We also were given great advice from Paul and Sue--friends who live on their boat at the Bundaberg Marina. Cruisers help each other-- and we have found the Aussies to be the friendliest bunch around! We arrived at Scawfell Island and were anchored by 3 pm in the western bay of Refuge Harbor. We did have to move our anchor as Serenity started to swing close to the coral shelf. We met Mark at Scawfell when he came by in his dinghy to say hello-- he is an American from Pheonix Arizona. Mark, his partner Liz, and their seven month baby, Dillon-Claire, are heading up to Darwin to also join the Indonesia Rally. We enjoyed a nice night at Scawfell--then up early and off to Hammo ( the Aussie name for Hamilton Island) in the Whitsunday group of islands.

The tree that the tree house is built on is still alive! The trunk goes up through the roof--Brad says it leaks there when it rains.

This is the tree house. Brad said that the owner of the island thought that it would be cool to build a tree house for the kids on visiting yachts to play in. But when he finished he thought it was to nice for a play house, so he rented it out.

Brad and I at the tree house--I felt like Swiss Family Robinson--remember that movie?

This sign is for our friend Trish as she said that people ask her why her husband, Steve, sails and climbs mountains. The usual answer is because "it is there"--she says "because he is not all there".
