5/31/2012 We got together with Ian and Angela (s/v Sea Eagle II) and Gunther and Uta (s/v Y-Not) on the beach at Lizard Island. We all aspired to climb to the top of the talllest hill on Lizard Island--to Cook's Lookout. In August 1770, then lieutenant James Cook, visited the east coast of Australia--charting and recording his voyage. He was nervous about the Great Barrier Reef as it got closer and closer to the mainland as he went north-- he was afraid that his vessel would get trapped. He was looking for a gap in the reef when he climbed to the top of this hill on Lizard Island. Actually, he climbed the hill twice before he spotted a gap in the reef to the south. We hiked up the steep trail to the summit--over some rocky terrain. The view (and wind) at the top was amazing. We signed the book that is kept in a box at the top, rested a bit, then headed back down to the beach and our dinghy.
