This 'stairway to heaven' on the wall of the medieval hospital in Siena advertised that this place welcomed holy pilgrims-- giving them free food and shelter. The hospital was very interesting to Sherry and I as the frescos depicted the work done in the hospital. One panel showed physicians washing a patient with a large leg wound--giving evidence that sanitation was of prime importance in the hospital. Another scene showed a physician examining a flask of urine--a common diagnostic test in the ancient days.
