Sunshine and Showers

Saturday

With the forecast predicting today would be the best for the next week weather-wise, we thought we'd better make the most of it. Leaving Mousehole in sunshine, less than ten minutes later we'd got the windscreen wipers on.

Our first stop was Porthcurno, owned by the National Trust and a beautiful, almost deserted beach at this time of year. Somehow we managed to be wearing both sunglasses and wet weather gear. Climbing the cliff path towards the Minack open air theatre was both steep and slippery but worth it for the views.

By contrast Lands End was dire. Brash and money grabbing, charging £3 to park the car in order to visit the West Country Shopping Village ("free admission") which has now been built on this iconic site. Peter de Savary bought the site in 1987 for £7 million, out bidding the National Trust, and turning the area into a theme park. Wikipedia says that attractions include children's playgrounds and recorded music. We wouldn't know - we didn't bother to park.

Instead we headed round the corner to Sennen Cove and another amazing beach popular with surfers even in December. Mind you, we didn't see much actual surfing, more posing with surf boards. . We joined the dog walkers and their ecstatic charges and ambled along the water's edge. This stroll had to be followed by fish and chips in the car park. Tradition.

Return to the West Country

Friday

After an overnight stop in Hereford to pick Neil up we're now back in the West Country - Mousehole ("Mowzel") in Cornwall, in fact. We haven't had much chance to explore yet but already we can see the place doesn't appear to have changed much in a long time. It really is surprisingly unspoilt and beautiful. On the down side that means it wasn't built for cars. What appears to be the pavement in the picture above is actually advertised as our parking space. The local bus driver doesn't agree. Naturally we've already visited the nearest pub.

Christmas Countdown

Monday

Twenty days to Christmas. Nearly three weeks. I'm feeling in control. The turkey and sprouts are in the freezer along with a dozen homemade mince pies. The bulk of the presents are wrapped while the cards are written, stamped and waiting to be posted. It even snowed today, just a little, and I've got a brand new snow shovel in the garage. Now all I need is SOMEONE TO FIX THE ROOF!

There's quite a campaign building up in the UK to make this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pWDp-cbKX4&feature=endscreen&NR=1
the Christmas Number 1. Just wanted to do my bit to promote it.
