Off we set upon the sea, to sail the islands in the lee... The Pollard family of four prepares to leave Alexandria, Va., home for 25 years, to spend two years sailing the Caribbean.

Fun on Volleyball Beach

03/04/2007, Volleyball Beach, Stocking Island

AFter a week in the marina at Georgetown, we spent the last two weeks on the hook in Elizabeth Harbour off of Volleyball Beach on Stocking Island. There were about 350 boats in the harbour for Regatta, and we met lots of them!
We fell into an easy pattern of walking Loki on the beach, trips to town for supplies (empty trash, get water, do laundry), and spending the afternoons relaxing on the beach.
Madison and Sara (from Manana) found a group of kids their age and spent long days and late evenings on the beach. The kids stayed mostly on the Atlantic side of Stocking Island, giving rise to the response, when looking for them, that they hade "gone to the other side".
Jen played lots of volleyball, with a very enthusiastic group of players of all ages most afternoons. David usually found a hammock nearby. Cheap burgers at the Chat and Chill pretty much made for a perfect end to most days!
Activities for regatta are still in full swing. Loki competed in the dog show, Madison attended the Pirates Ball (which we missed, staying aboard for big winds to keep anchor watch), and she helped with childrens day activities--cruiser and local kids.
We moved to Emerald Bay Marina yesterday, marking the first step on our return home.

Georgetown, Great Exuma Island
Jennie and David
02/18/2007, Elizabeth Harbour

Hello from Georgetown. We have enjoyed the convenience of being at the dock in Georgetown for over a week, but after the front blows through tomorrow we will move across the harbour and anchor off Stocking Island. We will no longer have to dingy across the harbour to get to Volleyball beach where we hang out most afternoons. However we will lose our access to the WIFI from the chicken coop here in town, and don't know when we will update next. We will not miss the dueling roosters that wake us up each morning at about 4:00 a.m.
Madison has made lots of friends and we are all enjoying the people we have met. We miss our friends and family at home and look forward to seeing you all in a couple of months.

Little Farmers Cay to Georgetown
Jennie and David
02/14/2007, Georgetown, Great Exuma

After a wonderful visit to Black Point Settlement we sailed down to Little Farmers Cay last Thursday, February 8. We hiked to the cave on Great Guana Cay, then enjoyed happy hour at the Farmers Cay Yacht Club with Bill and Cathy from s.v. Pelican--free conch fritters and half price Kalik! Friday we sailed from Little Farmers to Elizabeth Harbour in calm seas and light winds. We traveled with friends on the Pelican and the Manana II. Pelican caught a nice wahoo and shared it for dinner--our first locally caught fish, and it was wonderful! It was about a six hour sail. We are still exploring Georgetown and love the area. Hope to update again soon!
