Slackers guide to boat waxing
10/30/2010

For those of you in the States who continue to wax your own boat please read this simple guide to doing it the Slacker way.

Step 1 Move your boat to Mazatlan

Step 2 Call Mazatlan Marine Services

Step 3 Enjoy doing other things while a crew of 3-4 professional boat polishers ply their trade for 2 days making your boat shine.

Step 4 Pay Mazatlan Marine Services ridiculously small amount of money. Such a small amount that you feel guilty. So small that in the States it would be considered a violation of minimum wage laws. How much you ask? One of our good friends just had his boat waxed in the States. For what he paid we could of have ours done 5 times.

Mazatlan will always have great, special memories for me! Enjoy my friends!
Just when you think its getting better.
Hot
10/15/2010, Mazatlan

If you would have ask me about the weather on Wednesday here is what I would have said. "Not too bad, it's hot but we are getting use to it."
Then there was Thursday. Apparently what we thought was a heat wave was actually a cold spell. The heat and humidity are back in force. Thursday was in the mid 90's with the humidity in the 80% range.
We now have something new to get use too.

Glad you guys made it safe. Have a cold one for me. It is now cloudy and overcast here with VERY light drizzle. Boat looks great. Later
Yeah we are here!!
10/15/2010, Marina Mazatlan

Slacker came thru the summer again with no problems! All the prep work we do at the end of the season really pays off, and Ruben takes good care of her.
Ok, so we have been here a week "what the hell have you guys been doing?" lets see, get the boat cleaned of the summer storage stuff, the covers for all the windows and ports, old tarps off "GOD IT'S HOT!", Taking everything out of the cockpit lockers so we can check the water in the batteries to have power "GOD IT'S HOT!" Gather all the shade and awnings we have to take some of the sun off the boat "GOD IT'S HOT!". Get the water up and running, plug in very fan we own to blow hot air around "GOD IT'S HOT". And that was Day 1.
Day 2-7 things are going great. The dingy is in the water, sails are up the fridge is cold, engine runs and 100 other little jobs have been accomplished. Yeah! We are a sailboat again.

Hey bro......I thought you were from Texas? Guess you've been in San Diego long enough to get spoiled to the cool weather. Glad all is well with your boat. Love to you both.

Is it hot down there? Glad to hear you have arrived safely and that all is well. Hope to see you somewhere along the coast this season.
Almost there
10/07/2010, Navajoa, Sonora Mx

Up at 0545 and on the road by 0615. Pulled into customs at K21 and picked up our visas. While standing in line we met some folks who are driving down from Canada to Barra de Navidad. "We love Barra, where do you live? Cuesta Comate, just up from Melaque"
For the non-cruisers that are reading this Cuesta Comate is know as secret anchorage #29. One of those places that is so nice you dont refer to it by name becaues you dont want anyone else going there. Oops, I guess I let the cat out of the bag. They invited us up for a visit and a shower if we stop there. We will, I gaurentee it.
We are currently in Navajoa which is about 400 miles south of Tucson and 350 from Mazatlan. Tomorrow another early morning on the road. We leave early not becaues of the miles to our next stop but to beat the heat.
Remember what I said in an earlier post about it being cooler on the drive down? Well, that only lasted as far as Tucson. Its hot.

Drive Safe Mike and Julie. Just Confirm from John Henke that I wil get to do the trip from Canaries to St. Martin on the 95 foot S/V Sorcerer. I am really excited. Will send you more later.
Thwarted again!
10/06/2010, Tucson

I knew it as too much to expect. Roll into the Dodge dealer and ask them to replace the hood release cable. And by the way, we are on the road and could you do it now?
Yea, kinda silly on my part. I did buy the part so I got that going for me.
Now we have the new improved Slacker hood hold down. Notice the addition of chafe gear(duct tape).
When driving in Mexico I try to drive like a local. You know, left turns from the right lane and forget that pesky turn signal. With our new hood hold down we will blend right in.
Some day soon I will have it fixed. If some of you thinking "those guys are crazy", well we are. Crazy like a fox. Your hood has a failsafe hook that keeps it from flying up and crashing into the window shield. All the rope is doing is adding a back up to a back up. Safety first I always say.

Enjoy the season guys, Rina and I are back in the SF Bay area and I am gainfully employed again. The cruising kitty is being replenished.
Weather
10/06/2010, Interstate 8 East of Yuma

The alarm went off at 0445. Up and at 'em, rise and shine.
Open the front door in time for the wind to blow a sheet of rain into my face. Wonderful. My favorite driving conditions. It was slow going through San Diego but it began to lighten up by the time we got to Alpine. Once we were over Crest Summit, elevation 4200 feet the sun began to rise and the rain stopped.
Our trip to Tucson every year is usually marked by temperatures well over 100 degrees which make driving miserable. Did I mention that our trusty van (Van Morrison) lacked air conditioning?
Fortunately for us the storm that we left behind in San Diego cooled everything down to a somewhat pleasant 85. Hopefully it holds until Mazatlan but I kind of doubt it.
Instead of going right to the motel in Tucson we went to the Dodge dealer. Why? Read the previous post.
