Overnight to San Blas

We left Stone Island Monday morning at 0830 after waiting a couple of days for some wind. After about 6 hours of motoring the wind filled in and we had a great 140 mile sail to Matachen Bay here in San Blas. We plan on staying a day or so and then continuing on to Tenacitita.

Slight delay
Mike & Julie
11/26/2010, Stone Island

Yesterdays (Friday) was spent walking on the beach. Not a forced march but a nice leisurely stroll of about 3 hours. At the end of the walk we stoped at Benji's pizza and had their special garlic shrimp and bacon pizza. Yum! You cant get anything like it in the States. We originally planed on leaving today but the favorable winds that have been blowing offshore have shut down. If we were a power boat the weather would be perfect however we try to be a sailboat when conditions allow. As it stands right now we will leave Monday to catch the start of a 15 knot North wind that should take us all the way to Barra de Navidad. That's the plan however as you know plans are written in the sand at low tide.

Finally out of the slip
Mike & Julie
11/26/2010, Stone Island

Just like it says "finally out of the slip" We left yesterday (Thursday) about 9:00 am for the long journey, well 11 miles to Stone Island. Stone is located just south of the breakwater that forms the old harbor of Mazatlan. The trip was shaping up to be a boring two hours when we sailed into a huge pod of dolphins. When I say huge I mean HUGE. Best guess, 500. No kidding. We got the anchor down about 11:30 and launched the dingy for a trip to the beach. After a long walk on the beach followed by a couple of beers at one of the palapa restaurants we headed back to the boat for a wonderful sunset and Thanksgiving steak, baked potatoes and salad. We really do have a lot to be thankful for. The plan is to head out tomorrow morning (Saturday) for Barra de Navidad which is just north of Manzanillo.

Reserved seats are $8.00 and a cold beer is $1.60. As usual the game is slow to start with the stands fairly empty until about the 4th inning. Most Mexicans work later hours than Americans so the stands really don't fill up until about 8:30.

Venados baseball game
11/18/2010

While we do enjoy rooting for the home team the real fun at a Mexican baseball game is people watching. Most notably, the food vendors. Unlike a San Diego Padres game where a well dressed water/waitress show up at your seat, takes your order and transmits it over a wireless device to be delivered by a runner shortly later. No, in Mexico all the food comes to you in boxes slung over the shoulders of kids. Empanadas, fruit cups, pizza, tacos, ceviche, sausages and of course peanuts, popcorn and cotton candy. The sausages vendors wear the nicest hats and our friend Joe from Pacific Jade just had to have his picture taken wearing one.

The other things I like about the baseball games are the sponsors. Doesn't this make you want to buy a cold Pacifico? Ignore the chicken, he just wanted his picture taken.

Or a new fire extinguisher?
I do!

By the way. While off to a slow start the Venados won 7-2.
Go Venados!

We had the first annual (we hope) Welcome Back Cruisers Pool and Taco Party this Saturday. Elvira the Office Manager/ Queen of Marina Mazatlan decided that we should have a party so she got permission from her condo to use the pool and patio for the afternoon.

We had a limit of 50 people. Elvira also just had Valeria's 1st birthday party and we hired the same caterer. 3000 pesos (60 per person) about $230.00 and the caterer brought the tables, chairs, table cloths, a karaoke machine, and all the food for 50. Handmade tortillas filled with carne asada, pork, or cheese, grilled onions salsas and horchata. Yummy!
