It's been a while since we have updated the blog but we been busy (yeah right! OK just lazy). We arrived in Santiago after a five hour sail. Not so bad but the autopilot crapped out on us on the way out of the bay, and we never hand steer. the second we are out of the slip or anchorage "Otto" comes on. And we don't touch the wheel again until we are ready to anchor. So after and exhausting five hour hand steered sail we arrived in beautiful Santiago Bay. Again there was just one other boat here. We spent the next day digging thru the bilge looking for the replacement part to fix Otto. (Mike spends some of his work days surfing eBay to find used parts for our 20 year old autopilot, but don't tell the boss) the new part was located and installed and hopefully will take us back to Mazatlan in a couple of weeks. The beach here was packed with people out for the holidays and there were jet skis and banana boats and water skiers thru out the bay. It made for a lumpy anchorage in the afternoons so we went ashore to the palapas on the beach and joined in the fun. By evening all was quiet and back to the peaceful anchorage we love. The fireworks show for New Years Eve was spectacular. There were fireworks all over the bay and we spent the night watching the displays from the boat.

And one of the best deals for movies, you can get first run movies for 2 for 50 pesos. Sometimes the first run movies are actually filmed in the theatre with a video camera and you see the other people watching the movie stand up and walk thru the shot. Hilarious!

One of the other reasons we like it here so much is this is the home of Stan and MJ of Solmate, ex cruisers who bought a house here in Santiago. Along with hosting the Solmate Santiago website, and Stan doing his weather updates for the cruisers, these guys put and amazing amount of work and passion to the local chapter of PATA- Personas Ayudando todos los Animales. With the help of an all volunteer group they spay and neuter the feral (and not so feral) cats and dogs of Santiago. We were lucky enough to see one of their clinics last Sunday. One of the ladies that volunteers donated the use of their very newly built home to hold the clinic, It is a gorgeous house on the golf course; they have not totally furnished the living, dining, and front entranceway so PATA had the run of the place.

The volunteer staff was amazing. Unfortunately the traps they had set out the night before failed to produce any cats. But homeowner's friend wanted her 2 dogs spayed and we got one of the local feral dogs into the clinic. I got to help one of the little girls recover from the drugs.

The vets and vet techs all give up their one day off so of course there is beer and pizza when all the surgeries are complete.

We have been having a blast in Barra! The town is a great place to hang out and there is plenty to do and great food everywhere. The week before Christmas was very busy, we had someone's birthday party almost every day. First it was Jim's from Windward Bound on the 20th, and then Laura's from Cirque the 21st, then Joanne from Misty Sea the 22nd, and finally mine on the 24th. I have never been around so many people who have birthdays the week before Christmas. It was a very fun.
