Christmas in Barra
23 December 2007 | Barra de Navidad

We made the long trip (15 miles) from Tenacitita to Barra de Navidad on Friday. Always an exciting trip because of the complicated entrance to the anchorage in Barra. The anchorage is in a lagoon that had a narrow channel dredged into it several years ago. The channel is only about 40' wide and is not marked. What you have to do is stare at your depth sounder and not look where you are going. When ever the depth is less than 10' you need to turn right or left quick. Since you are in a lagoon the water is not particularly clear so you can't use the water color as an indicator of depth. The channel is only a half mile long, but it seems to take forever. The anchorage is very calm and tropical. If you would like to see what the anchorage looks like just watch an old rerun of "McHale's Navy". Barra was the location for all of the background shots. We will be staying here through the New Year and then we plan to mover further south to Santiago Bay which is near Manzanillo.
