Giving each other haircuts!
I've been giving Barry haircuts since we moved aboard, but let's face it he's bald -- how hard can that be once you have the shears? Oops, I meant clippers!
My hair on the other hand needs a little more finesse. I like it mid-length and layered. On the positive side, I have a little curl in my hair so it is a bit more forgiving and can hide a few mistakes.
My last haircut was in Grenada. The top layers had grown out enough to get in my eyes (nose, mouth, etc.) but to short to stay in a clip or under a cap. I looked into a haircut in Martinique, but the cheapest was $50 US! In Grenada I paid $16 US. I know, I use to pay a lot more before we moved aboard, but I was working. I had an very comfortable income and had to look professional, and frankly, I could afford indulge myself -- not so much now.
I think the whole process was way more stressful on Barry than me. He spent an hour and a half looking at videos on the internet about how to cut hair, particularly a layered hair cut. When he finally started to cut I thought he was going to hyperventilate from the stress of it. He just about went over the edge when I refused to let him cut it inside the boat -- people die when their bilge pumps get clogged up! No matter how careful we were, I could foresee a lot of hair ending up in the bilge and cleaning the bilge is not a fun thing.
What would have normally been a 20-minute haircut (I have a lot of hair -- well I use too!) turned into 1-1/2 hours. At times I would swear he was cutting one hair at a time! The end result was a lot shorter than I expected (and he wanted) but not too bad for our first try. The good thing about hair is it grows back and mine grows really fast so I will be ready for round two long before Barry is!
