San Blas Jungle River Trip

16 January 2010 | San Blas Mexico
Jodee
Today is January 16 and it is a real early get up. When you get in cruise mode early is about 8:00 or 9:00 am if you are not going to listen to the ham nets. Now real early is at 5:30 am. The alarm was set so not to miss the Victoria Rose Water Taxi to Singlar Marina. The city taxi came at 6:40 am and took us to catch the panga and start out 3.5 hour tour. We were the first boat on the river at 7:00 am. Our guide was the best. Every time he spotted any wild life he stopped, pointed it out and told us its species name in Spanish and English and allowed us as much time as we needed to take a photo. If we spotted something he would back up and stop. In spots the river got to about fifteen feet wide and a canopy of vegetation above. It was really neat to motor into this tunnel. At one point we had to go under a couple of bridges and the water was so high that the clearance between the bridge and the panga was about one foot and we all had to lower our selves to the floor so we would not bang our heads. They have counted 400 species of birds in this area and bird watchers come from around the world for bird watching. A Mexican movie was also filmed on this river leaving behind three grass huts on stilts that were made from local river wood. We saw: green herons, blue herons, tiger herons, pelicans, plovers, night herons, king fishers, white cranes, ibis, black vultures, anhinga, spoon bills, turkey vultures, hawks, and many others we do not remember. Not to mention Iguanas, crocks. He took us to the crocodile breading farm which is also a small zoo. The reflections in the water were undisturbed and perfect. It is certainly a highlight and not to be missed. This is how it works; you pay for the boat at 480 pesos (which is about $37.00 to $40.00 USD) and you can have one to eight people on the boat. We split the cost with Victoria Rose. Everyone had a great time.

After the jungle trip Russ and Steve went over to help Charlie on Cast Away with his electrical problem. Then Rich on Third Day joined in. They discovered that it must be a bad ground wire. We were all supposed to go into town for ice cream and did not make it. We were too tired and just had spaghetti for dinner and watched our photos of the day.
