Swen. good
Hi,

like always, the time is running and not enough time for the blogs.

A little in - between , resume from the Caribbean travel.

At the moment we are at Puerto Rico, on one the the two Islands in front of the mainland Puerto Rico, coming from south, Vieques, before we visited Culebra, both as well named as the " Spanish Virgin Islands".

Sailing up the whole chain of islands, from Trinidad / Tobago started the Windward Islands , Grenada, Grenadines, St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, and then the Leeward Islands, Guadeloupe, Antigua, St.Kitts and Nevis, St. Martin ( St. Marteen ), Anguilla ,The British Virgin Island and the US VI were interesting , and from the sailing site a nice ride; very nice as well as the distances between the islands are mostly between 20 and 60 NM, by 70 % you see the next island already.

All of the Islands having their own character, their own feelings and flavors.

Not only if they are political independence , or a territories of a origin European Country, the way they chose to live there lifes , open up more to tourism or not, the different ways were more than interesting.

Water quality , by more clear or not, corals in quantity and quality were as different as well.

Lots of pictures has been taken and it will take us a while until we worked thru to all and set them in the galleries.

Lets start with our point of views to the different island groups :

After Grenada, like Tobago and Trinidad is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar the currency , as well as in the Grenadines, St. Lucia, Dominica, Montserrat, Antigua and Anguilla, all those island are independence , but still with one British governor, are the Grenadines which we liked most.
Nice clear water, friendly people and not to expensive.

Dominica and Kitts and Nevis are not so much open to the tourism , and there are the places where we watched most for steeling and dinghy security. But some of the bays were unspoiled and unique by landscape, good restaurants and bars are rear.

Kitts and Nevis not so good anchorages, people were mostly nice ,as there are part of Netherlands Antilles, but a bit different in the atmosphere.

St.Lucia were some good, clear waters, not many corals, much more touristic as the other places, and as well much more variety by restaurants, bars etc.

The three french Islands were the best if it comes to Supermarket, Restaurants, and things for the ship, spare parts, service etc.
In Martinique we changed our battery bank, the old batteries were 6,3 years old, from San Francisco.

Nice bays and beaches as well on those islands, the villages belong to the beaches or bays more with a french Mediterranean feeling , water clearness not so good.
Currency is the Euro, except the Netherlands part of St. Martin, US Dollar there.

In all french island we hired as well cars or scouters to explore the islands over land.

We liked it a lot there, in St. Martin we did as well the annual ship out hull and ruder repair.

We spent Christmas at Guadeloupe, Deshaies and New Year in Antigua, English Harbor.

With Anguilla and than the BVI and US VI the water quality become very good again, as well as snorkeling and coral reefs.

In the BVIs of course, nice beaches and bays, but tons of charter boats, everywhere and in quantities, as well in the US VI.

Here in the Puerto Rico we like it a lot as well. US standard but more south american mentality , relax, much less charter tourism , clear waters and partying a lot with nice atmosphere.

St. Lucia, tomorrow to St. Martinique

13 November 2015 | St. Lucia - Rodney Bay
Hi family , friends and fellow sailors

we left Grenada for the outer island of Carriacou, still Grenada teritorry. Anchoring there in the Tyrell Bay was nice, clean water, no swell. We spent there a couple of days, one nice Restaurant " Slipway ", went to the main town, Hillsborough, and visited Sandy Island Anchorage.

Leaving there, after oil change and filling up water and fuel, diesel was only 35 cent per liter, easy access to the pier, we sailed to the Grenadines, starting with Petit St. Vincent, Palm Island and Union Island.
Everywhere nice , clear water, part wise good snorkeling, original nice anchorage at Union Island behind the reef and the small Bar island in the middle " Happy Island".

Further some days at Mayreau Island, anchoring at Saline Bay and Saltwhistle Bay .

Than the Tobago Cays, two times, one with bad weather, the second time with nice, sunny weather. Swimming with the turtles, nice snorkeling, very nice colored fish .

Further north we sailed to Canouan Island, anchored at Grand Bay, in front of the Tamarind Hotel and in the north, Little Bay.

From there to Mustique Island, it is a private island, Bill Gates, Mike Jagger and some others having houses there, we made a little round trip by a kind of Golf car, visited the great famous" Barsil Bar" , and anchored three days in the Britania Bay.
Again, clear water, nice swimming. Like all of the places before, we are still in off season , witch is sometimes nice, not as crowded, sometimes not, a few restaurants and shops are closed. And here.... no Mike Jagger, no Hilfinger.... bhhhhhhh.

From Mustique to Bequia Island, beautiful nice anchorage in the big Admiralty Bay , in front of Princess Margaret Beach.

The main town, Port Elisabeth,is a clean small town, some good restaurants around the Bay, all with dinghy docks, crystal clear water, good swimming, one very good Shop for food : "Doris fresh food".

At all places were no problems at all, of course, we hoist the dinghy every night up. But compare to some comments from other sailors and info from noonsite, there were no stress so fare.

Bequia we left at the 29.10.2015 to St. Vincent, spending the first night at the Blue Lagoon. Not half way as nice as described, we left the next morning, as well the next anchorages further north, in front of Young Island was not that good; so we sailed further to the Cumberland Bay.

To set the anchor it is a little tricky , but a picturesque bay like out of one old pirate film.

The last night we spent in the north of St. Vincent in Chateaubelair Bay, quiet but not clear water.

On the 02.11.we left early morning for St. Lucia, made a nice and slow sightseeing around the beaches and bays in the south of the Island, sailed up to Marigot Harbor, a beautiful little bay with hotel and beaches in the passages, well protected place with again clear water.

We met several other sailors there, Dick and Anita from "Kind of Blue "as well as Tom with friend from "Ever After " spent some nights in the bay.

One, for us new ship with Eddy and Gaby, from " Long Tara", a Formosa 46, we met.

We spent nine days the before we left for Rodney Bay, where we are now. By Monday, normally today, but I forgot to check out yesterday, we will move on to Martinique. Season is here now, but still not to heavy, definitely we will be out of the area before the ACR is falling in here with ca 200 Ships , coming from the Canaries.

At the moment we have no fix plan for X mas, maybe St. Marteen..... we will see.

At St. Lucia, during the time in Marigot Harbour, we had heavy rain periods, but now the weather is nice again, wind around 12 - 17 Kts., mostly E - NE.

Guys, hasta la vista, new album with pictures I will put one in Martinique.

Time is , like always, running to fast.........

02 October 2015 | Sandy Island - Grenadines
Swen
Hi family , friends and fellow sailors

it is already the third of October and our last blog is from August..... Katrin´s son Oliver and his girlfriend Vanessa has been on board for a couple of days.
To short to go somewhere far, therefore we where just around Grenada.

Before , we sailed down to Trinidad for the repair of our Honda Generator, we piked wrong Gasoline at Suriname. Trinidad we did not liked at all, we think maby for Carneval or ship repairs and is ok, further than that is the island not charming at all.

After there visit we made some trips on the island of Grenada, very nice and extremely green island. On the southwest side are several good bays and beaches to anchor nice and in calm. We had have some miner repairs on canvas and left than for Carriacou, some 30 miles N-NE , where we spent several days in Tyrrel Bay, meeting there once, again with Dick and Anita from S\V Kind of Blue.

Yesterday we left to Sandy island, where we anchoring now, tomorrow we following on to Union Island and some days later to Tobago Cays.

Some hurricanes past by , far in the south of us, landed by Martinique an further on, Joaquin is still round the Bahamas. But it dos not looks like we see one coming down this direction for this H- Season ( knock, knock, knock ) and that is the reason we starting a little sooner to sail north. taking all the time to pass all Caribbean islands on the way to Florida\ Cuba.

Pictures coming a bit later , having lots of nice anchorages in front of us , looking up the travel books, and we locking forewards to them.

Hi

from Suriname , Paramaribo we went straight to Tobago, Charlotteville, Pirate Bay, where we spend 20 nice , relaxed days.

One Tour with the bus, one with the car around the Island.

We like Tobago a lot.

As our Honda Generaror not started any more we left Charlotteville for Trinidad on the 26. for Service.

The Trip where 72 n miles with S_ SE winds 10 - 27 kts. We needed 14.5 h.

THE BAY of Chaguramas is verry choppy and comercial the water is dirty and the music from Bars, Restaurants an Party ships fare to loud.

Check in where easy. On the next morning , after visiting the gasoline station , we sailed around the corner to Carinage Bay.

As the Service Station for the Honda is in land, we rented a car for four days, today is Trinidad/Tobago independence day here, long weekend , more loud music and drunken folk's.

By tomorrow the Generator should be ready and we're leaving as quickly as possible to Grenada, Prickly Bay.

The trips we made by car to Port of Spain, as well to the south and nord coast where so la la, if you d'ont need service here, is not worth to visit Trinidad.

On the 05.09. we meet Katrins son Oliver and his girlfriend Vanessa to spend some time together on board.

More than and pictures coming later.

It's about time......

Hi friends and family,

I know, we are a little back in detail reports ........ but here we are :

On the 11.06.2015 at 17.30 we entered the airplane from Air Suriname to Amsterdam, and arrived there on the next morning, with train and rental to our house near Bonn.

Several reasons for that . The rainy season in Suriname is heavy and we had enough from tons of water every day.. our passports were full, we did't have enough place left for coming to the Med, visiting all nice Islands on the way, and than, as the coming winter season is the main season for the Caribbean we will not coming home to Germany before arriving in the Med, by July - August next year.

On the other hand we did not liked to leave the ship to long alone, therefore we're flying back to Paramaribo on the 21.07.2015 and sailing on to Trinidad around the begin of august 2015.

Until the end of the hurricane season in the Caribbean we will sailing around Trinidad, Tobago and Grenada. After the end of the hurricane time we moving on further on the leeward Islands and more.

Even thinking that the five weeks here in Germany is giving enough time to all those things , like p.e. this blog , but as always, the time is to short,........ but it is as it is.

With this blog entry I will set up as well our pic gallery . New Album like ; South Atlantic crossing from Namibia over Helena and Ascension; Brasil ; and Suriname will set up with new pics.

For the future I will promise better and quicker actions on the blog, hoping that this promise is not like planing of sailors future navigation.... written in the sand by low tide.

The time here is, like mostly, a nice and interesting time.... brake from sailors live, visiting lots of friends and family, bike rides etc.etc. But as ever... the time is passing by way to quick and sailors life must go on. But we are coming to the end of our Sailing Journey.

By April next year we want to be in the Bermudas, leaving to the Azores, and from there to the Med.

In the Med we are planing one more year sailing around, and than our sailors life is coming to the end. Guys, you will hear from as again from Trinidad and in the meantime we wish everyone a nice summer time, stay cool.

Crossing of the South Atlantic

13 April 2015 | Cabadelo, Jacare, Brasil
Swen
Hi,

as you all could follow, we crossed from Simons Town to Saldanaha Bay, still SA, from there to Lüderitz, Namibia. Both trips where fine so fare, a little bumpy to Saldanaha.
Lüderitz where kind of nice, a little sleepy Village in the middle of no where, provisioning where good, filling up as well with water and diesel.

Leaving Lüderitz, to St. Helena it is 1200 NM, the first two days wind from beam 25-30 knts., the rest of the days 15 - 20 knts, most beam , wing on wing sails. After about 400 NM the sea became more quiet and the swell normal. We sailed together with Kilkea 2, there arrived after 8 days at St Helena, ( there have a reacher, we not ) we after 10 days.

St. Helena where a nice stop over fore 6 Days. We made a trip with a local guide over the island, visited Napoleons House and Grave, and wend to all the inner green valleys and mountains from the island. The anchorage in front of Jamestown where ok, a little windy , but no rocking. There provide taxi service to shore , dinghy landing is kind of catchy.

We spend some nice, relaxing days there, filled up our jerry cans with diesel and left for Ascension. The first two days the wind where good, beam reach again 20 knts., wing on wing sailing, the next 3 days the wind calmed down a little, but still good, calm seas .Both Ships arrived at Ascension on the 5 day , left 700 NM behind us.

The island is, like St. Helene volcanic, two military bases , British and American, no habitants. The landing Place is on lee to the wind directions , Village name is Georgetown. We rented a Car for one day to explore the hole island, including all Bars , Restaurants and the two military bases.

We left, jerry cans again filled up, changing our planes , not sailing to Fernado , we red bad reports from our sailor friends how visited there in the weeks before, and pointed for Jacare, " Kind of Blue " and " Imagine " where there, gave us good reports, nice and safe location, easy access and now stress.

The trip where on other 1200 NM, by good winds 7 days . we had have not very strong winds , 4 days motoring and needed 9 Days, both ships landed early morning on the 09.04.2015 in Jacare. on easy . sometimes boring, trip. The little Village is located on the Rio Paraira, the channel to the Village, anchorage and Marina is marked.

The place is a relaxed and safe one, fine support fore cruisers, 100 Real per week when you anchoring, includes the pool use, shower , wi fi, and dinghy dock, Restaurants, Shops and train station to Joao Pessoa, the next big town near by, 18 KM. Renting as motorcycle and , or car is possible.

Stuart and Sheila from Imagine , as well Dick and Anita from Kind of Blue gave us a nice welcome and we all had have a nice Dinner together on the first evening. Jacare Marina Village is owned by French guys, many French, and Dutch boats are here, as well some Swiss, Germans, Austrians, SA and British.

So fare the place is great to leaf the ship as well some days untenanted to explore the areas near by or to fly to Rio. The next Airport is at Joao Pessoa.

More reports coming later, we having a Motorcycle rented for one week, and than we will see.

Hasta la vista amigos,

Hi sailors and friends,

since 4 days we are at St. Helena. The Passage was OK, in the beginning more wind as expected, but then it calms down. After 10 days on the ocean we arrived at St.Helena and friends from Kilkea 2 helped us with the mooring...a nice welcome.

Situated in the middle of the south atlantic ocean, the place and is a extra ordinary place in many ways. The Napolion story , the history and the fact to come here is only by ship, the new airport is under construction, make the island a very remote and odd place.

With a fellow named Robert. we did a great day tour on the island and get well informed over all the details and stories from St. Helena. Together wit the crew of Kilkea we spend a nice couple of days here.

By Saturday we will move on for Ascesion, distance 701 N.M., and from there to the Brasil island Fernando da Norhona, one other 1100 NM. From there to the Caribbean islands will be on other 1600 N.M. , therefore we will have non ore very little Internet for the next 5 - 6 weeks.

We will tray to send as much position reports we can on the way, but don,t get yumpy if you don´t here from us as much as usual during that time.

Hi, I know, I have been a little lazy in the past weeks, but here we are......

From Durban we did a nice round trip with a rent a car to Johannesburg, Pretoria, a few days at Kruger National Park , Swaziland and back. New pics from there in the Gallery , Africa....

Then we left for Port Elisabeth, normally for Mossel Bay, but we left Durban to early, I still had a very nasty flu , and the strong wind on the way was to much, Kati got that thing as well on the way, therefore we decided to shorten to Port Elisabeth to rest our bodies.

By the 13.12. we left Port Elisabeth for Simon's Town , where we arrived at the 17.12, with one 20 hour brake ( wind from SW ) at Plettenberg Bay.

We are at the Marina in Simon's Town, many other Sailor friends from the last seasons are here as well, visited Cape Town in the between time and having a Camper Van rented from the 22.12. on for a 3 weeks round trip to Namibia, around here, wineries etc.

The pics from Kruger etc. are in the Gallery. We wish everybody a very nice x- mas and a happy new year, only the best and we will blog as well from Namibia when we are there.
