Journey's End, At Rockland Maine

02 August 2011 | Rockland, ME
Cap'n Monty
We slipped out of North Haven this morning and slowly steamed through the Fox Island Thoroughfare towards the western portion of Penobscot Bay. We hoisted sail as we approached the western end of the thoroughfare. I was tempted to leave all stowed and save labor, but this was our last chance to sail and Austin and I didn’t want to miss it. As often happens, the wind died as soon as we hoisted sail. We crawled along for awhile, but we soon decided to steam on to Rockland in order to grab some lunch. There was a US Navy Arley Burke class destroyer at anchor in the harbor as we approached.

We secured a mooring with Journey’s End Boat Works. How fitting this was, as this location truly marks the end of this years journey for the Edge family. Tomorrow we will rent a car, pack our things, and leave the Song lonely again on her mooring while we return to NC. After taking care of a few things at home and getting the boys started back in school, I will return to the Song to bring her home for the season. This will be our last blog update until I return to bring the Song home. I appreciate all of you who kept up with us and shared our adventures with us. This has truly been an amazing experience and by far our best and most rewarding cruise to date. We will definitely return to Maine again, only next time we’ll come straight here to enjoy all that Maine has to offer. A sailor could sail here for 15 years and not see all the anchorages and islands that exist here. For those of you that cruise, or wish to, get that boat and get ready to join us next time.

As in past cruises, we have discussed our voyage favorites and the list is as follows…

New Nautical Friends – Tim & Kathy Reilly of s/v Carina, and Rod & Cara Collins of s/v Cupecoy
Marina – Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, NJ
Anchorage – McGlathery Island, part of Merchant Row Islands in Penobscot Bay
Small Town – Milford, CT
Big City – Newport, RI
Restaurant – Maritime Parc at Liberty Landing NJ
Restroom/Showers – South Wharf in South Dartmouth, MA
Meal Aboard – Lobster bake ashore at Snow Island
Sail – McGlathery to Seal Bay; got to sail between many small islands, rocks, and channels
Activity – Lobster bake ashore at Snow Island
Museum – Mystic Seaport, CT
Chandlery – Hamilton’s Marine in Portland & Rockland
Most Bizarre Place – Provincetown, MA on 4th of July

I will soon upload the remaining photos of this voyage to the Sailblog gallery. I will send you all an email to let you know. I will also let you know when I return to the Song so that you can follow her during the 750 mile journey home. Fair winds and following seas to you all.
