Back to Boothbay

20 July 2011 | Boothbay Harbor, ME
Cap'n Monty
We slipped our mooring and plucked our stern anchor from the bottom of beautiful Damariscove Island harbor and we silently slipped past the boats anchored there and into the Atlantic. Conditions were calm, yet we did not point our bow north and east as we had planned. We were bound to return to Boothbay Harbor on this day as the Admiral (Amy) was concerned about the potential for bad conditions offshore which were forecast to start in the afternoon. We elected to return to Boothbay and either wait-out the windy weather or attempt an inland visit to see family friends at Schoodic Lake in Brownville Junction, ME.

I have to mention this beautiful traditional Crocker sailboat that we encountered at Damariscove Island. The captain was a firm traditionalist from stem, to stern, to his gig, and his yachtsman style anchor. I must commend the amount of work he must put into creating and maintaining this beautifully crafted vessel. It was a joy to behold. You will see the Crocker in the picture posted with this blog and with the old life Damariscove Island saving station in the back ground.

We slowly steamed back into Boothbay which was only a short distance away from Damariscove Island. We found a better mooring location than before and we moored the Song again by the Tug Boat Inn in Boothbay. Before we could make our plans, we had to make several phone calls to determine if a rental car was available, if lodging at Schoodic was available, and if our friends were in a position to spend time with us at this time. All the planets aligned and the Songs laid plans for a visit to Schoodic Lake, a reunion with old friends, and some lake trout fishing. This would be a good way to spend the time waiting for conditions to improve for our venture north and east. It is not storms that are about, but winds which are forecast to be 20-25kts for the next 2-3 days due to the affects of the heat that we're all feeling.

Austin & I spent some time on Wednesday afternoon trying to catch a striped bass in the harbor, but with no success. Hopefully we'll have more success with the lake trout. We will continue to blog our adventures during this land visit. Thanks for tuning in.
