Return To, And Of The Song

15 August 2011 | Rockland, ME
Cap'n Monty
It’s been a few weeks since we left the Song on a mooring in Rockland Harbor. We’ve been home, been to Snowshoe WV, and now the boys are ready to start back in school. I left WV for Maine in the same little rental car we got in Rockland while the rest of the crew headed back to NC to start school. It was a 16hr trip to Rockland from Snowshoe and I was very happy to be out of that little car. I am here in Rockland now to bring the Song home to NC. The weather is really crappy here now with cool temps, overcast skies, and constant rain. I rowed me and my gear the ¾ mile out to the Song in the pouring rain. She was all dandy and patiently waiting there on her mooring. It was evening by then so I settled in made my plans to prepare the Song for the journey home.

Via the most direct route, it is about 815 miles home and will take close to two weeks assuming some lay days. If I sail the entire trip solo and keep close to all available ports of call, it becomes a 1000 mile trip back to Wayfarer’s Cove and it will certainly take more than two weeks. I have been working on obtaining some crew to help me sail off shore so that I can make time between Cape Cod and Norfolk, VA. If I can make some overnight passages, it will cut a lot of time off the trip. I really want to get home before Labor Day if possible. Not to mention it is storm season and I really don’t want to get caught somewhere on the East Coast without good shelter for the Song should a Hurricane approach.

Tomorrow, I must turn in the rental car, provision the Song, take on water, and make other preparations to get underway. There looks to be a good weather window on Wednesday and I want to depart during that window. As for tonight, it’s blowing a steady 23kts in the anchorage and it looks like it will be a rolly and noisy night. I like to be rocked asleep by waves, but the constant slapping of the water on the hull and howling in the rigging takes things a bit beyond a really good snooze.
