People we have met.

Sailing Yacht "TIVIA". Some of the people we have met include Julie, LZ0OP, a charming Bulgarian concert pianist, her husband, Donchau and little daughter. Donchau had sailed across the Atlantic living mainly on plankton. He had two books published and a special postage stamp was issued in honor of his research. They were currently on the homeward leg of a two-year round-the-world voyage, something not easy to get permission to do in a country which, at that time, was still dominated by Communism.

Then there was a Czechoslovakian who, having got permission to go sailing from his government, met and married an American girl in order to get into America. He left her, although she refused to divorce him, to meet his girl friend who had managed to get out of Czechoslovakia.

We were given a tape of beautiful clarinet music played by a sailor who had built his own boat and paid his way round the world playing his clarinet. He returned many years later on a second voyage.

Bill and Laura Howell from America became our friends. They spent several years in Durban where Bill worked before moving to Cape Town where Laura studied at, while Bill worked. Having heard all the stories about sailing from Durban to Cape Town they decided that this wasn't for them and, as Bill's firm always transported "household effect" when they transferred their staff, Bill persuaded them that they should transport "Forever" to Cape Town by road! We were very delighted to welcome them back to our shores many years later when they were on a circumnavigation with their two teen-age sons aboard their yacht "Emma". This time, though, they sailed bravely down our coast!
