Campbell River Chores
04 June 2017 | Discovery Harbor Marina - Campbell RIver, BC
Steve - Partly Sunny with moderated SE winds
Somehow on our previous trips we have never visited Grace Harbor - our mistake. It is a beautiful, well protected, and extraordinarily quiet anchorage and we had the place to ourselves. Rained a bit, but mostly it was calm and overcast. Little did we know what havoc was being wreaked out in the Strait of Georgia, When we nosed out at 0730 Friday morning, it was kicking up to about 15kt for the run up the Okeover Inlet. Then we turned the corner at Sarah Point and experienced the 20+kt wind opposing the flood tide and the seas were a confused 2-3 feet. It was forecast to get worse, so we ducked into Cortes Bay and sat around for several hours until it had a chance to peak at 30 knots and start on down. Finally, we again set out and endured 3 hours or so of beam seas over to Cape Mudge, where a moderate tide rip added to the fun.
Anyway, made Campbell River too late to pick up the replacement radome, so we are spending the weekend here with laundry, provisions, showers, boat cleaning, etc. Should be off again with a new radome by Noon Monday. Not all chores and work, though, we met another of the Great Norther Boater's Net stalwarts, who lives on Quadra Island, for lunch today and had a great time sharing cruising stories.
It's coming up on full moon, which will make the tidal rapids a little strong for our first time through, so we will probably hole up in the Octopus Islands next week and run the rapids the week after. Schedule, what schedule?
