The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

New Electronics

13 June 2014 | Alameda, CA
Pat
We ordered a suite of new electronics: B&G Zeus Touch at the helm and navigation station, 3G Broadband radar, GPS, T41 instruments (with new wind vane and speed/depth/temp transducer.

My Dad, Jim Damm, came to town to lend a hand. It took us nine days, working from 8 am to 5 pm to pull the old gear and install the new. It was hard work, but I now know where every wire and cable goes.

Our old system was Raymarine circa 2000. It had monochrome screens. When I tried to sell the old gear at the local consignment store they would not take the old displays. The guy said the CRT (tube weighing 10lbs) monitor could not be sold (no one would want it). Our Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) at the helm had a burn spot. He said he could not sell that one either. I mentioned a neighbor expressed interest in the LCD. He said it would be wrong to take money for the LCD. I gave it to our neighbor hoping he could find a use for it.

The upgrade included new communications gear. We now have an Inreach satellite text/email/SOS device (no voice, only data) along with an Iridium 9575 sat phone with docking station. A new ACR Cat II EPIRB rounds out the new gadgets.

There have been a few glitches and key strokes to work out, but everything is up and running.
